Camp Hornet provides eight weeks of an outstanding summer camp experience with well-rounded activities for campers entering grades 1 to 8. At Camp Hornet, we adhere to the philosophy that the key to a successful camping experience starts with each child having an enthusiastic and experienced counselor. We maintain a low camper/counselor ratio, and we provide a safe environment in which fun and learning go hand in hand. As part of each camp day, your child will have an instructional swim lesson and a recreational swim period in our indoor heated pool. Our Red Cross-certified swimming instructors evaluate each child to determine ability level and then, over the course of each week, develop lessons to improve swimming skills and confidence in the water.
To maximize fun for everyone, Camp Hornet is divided into four age groups. Our youngest campers are introduced to the excitement of summer camp when they become part of Hornet Juniors (Grades 1 & 2). Understanding that camp can represent a set of "firsts", from riding the bus to learning to swim, we work with families to create a gentle transition for fun and discovery. Our younger program centers on a balance of structured activities with free play opportunities. During carefully paced days that balance physical and creative activities with both structured and imaginative play, our younger campers thrive at Camp Hornet. Your child will be in a safe and nurturing environment supervised by adult counselors who have experience working with young children.
For our middle age groups, Hornets (Grades 3 & 4) and Stingers (Grades 5 & 6), Camp Hornet is all about choices! Campers will have the opportunity to enjoy arts & crafts, games/challenges, water slides/water play, hiking, and nature exploration. Sports activities include: baseball, basketball, flag football, kickball, soccer, capture the flag, floor hockey, volleyball, and tennis (just to name a few!). All equipment and instruction is geared to insure the success of our campers.
Our older campers are known as Adventurers (Grades 7 & 8) and, as the name implies, our advanced program balances the many exciting on campus activities listed above with the opportunity to experience new challenges away from our Skiff Street campus. Some of those experiences include Lake Wintergreen for fishing and hiking, Sleeping Giant State Park and Lighthouse Beach for hiking and exploring, and visiting other popular local attractions. As our campers mature, this program offers more opportunities to increase personal growth, social development, and leadership skills.
