Camp Hornet

This year, Camp Hornet will provide five weeks of an outstanding summer camp experience with well-rounded activities for campers from ages 6 to 14 (campers must be 6 years of age before their first day of attendance at camp).  At Camp Hornet, we adhere to the philosophy that the key to a successful camping experience starts with each child having an enthusiastic and experienced counselor.  We maintain a low camper/counselor ratio, and we provide a safe environment in which fun and learning go hand in hand. As part of each camp day, your child will have an instructional swim lesson and a recreational swim period in our indoor heated pool.  Our Red Cross-certified swimming instructors evaluate each child to determine ability level and then develop lessons to improve swimming skills and confidence in the water over the course of each week.

To maximize the fun for everyone, Camp Hornet is divided into age-appropriate groups.  Our youngest campers are introduced to the excitement of the summer camp experience.  Understanding that camp often represents a set of "firsts" for children, we work with families to create a gentle transition for fun and discovery.  Our younger program centers on a balance of structured activities with free play opportunities.  Our younger campers thrive at Camp Hornet during carefully paced days balancing physical and creative activities with structured and imaginative play Your child will be in a safe and nurturing environment supervised by adult counselors who have years of experience working with young children.

For our middle and older age groups, Camp Hornet is all about choices!  Campers will have the opportunity to enjoy arts & crafts, games/challenges, water slides/water play, hiking, and nature exploration.  Sports activities include baseball, basketball, flag football, kickball, soccer, capture the flag, floor hockey, volleyball, and tennis (just to name a few!).  All equipment and instruction are geared to ensure the success of our campers.

Camp Hornet is also proud of its Dungeons and Dragons option which, through fantasy storytelling and role-play, provides the opportunity for campers to participate in the world's greatest roleplaying game.  Has your child ever dreamed of being a knight or going on a perilous adventure?  This group strives to be a unique outlet for creativity for all of its members.  We supply all materials needed.  The Dungeons and Dragons group aims to foster in its members a love for the game, and the camaraderie that it spawns, in the hope that campers will carry this with them far beyond their camp experience. This offering is incorporated into our daily schedule for campers who may want to join at any time.  Those campers will also participate in other camp activities, swim lessons, free swim, and field trips.

For all ages, Camp Hornet provides a unique and thoughtful approach to hands-on learning.  Children will have the opportunity to design, build, and explore.  From building with cardboard, recyclables, and paper to constructing unlimited projects such as a playground, roller coaster, car, or whatever they imagine!

We will continue throughout the summer with our special activities and theme days for all of Camp Hornet. The air-conditioned Beckerman Athletic Center (Skiff Street Campus) will serve as a "home base" for all of our activities - both inside and out!  The weekly tuition is $370 ($296 for the shortened July 3rd week).  Campers have the flexibility of registering for any combination of one to five weeks between the dates of June 26th and July 28th. Camp Hornet meets daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For each day of camp, your child will need to bring a backpack with a snack, lunch, water, a bathing suit, and a towel all labeled with their name.  Sunscreen should be applied at home and additional labeled sunscreen should be sent in.  We highly recommend having your child wear a sun protection shirt as we are outdoors each day.  (PLEASE, NO PEANUT PRODUCTS!)

Change/Cancellation Policy: Any program may be canceled because of insufficient enrollment, in which case, the registration fee would be refunded in full. Once registration is processed, any subsequent change in registration made by you will result in a $25.00 administrative fee. For cancellations made on or before May 29, 2023, you will receive a full refund minus the $100.00 non-refundable deposit. Cancellations after May 29th, will not receive a refund. If you have any questions about your registration, please contact Bruce Rich (brich@hamdenhall.org).

CAMP HORNET will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th

Sports Camps

Our Summer Sports Camps strive to develop the whole athlete in your child. With our diverse offerings, campers improve their skill level and develop the confidence needed to attain a high level of success. With our variety of offerings, your child has the unique opportunity to participate in other sports activities and, by doing so, promote better physical development as a result of this exposure. Whether you choose one sport or more than one, your child will receive instruction from qualified coaches with years of experience working with children.

All of our Sports Camps, unless otherwise noted, are in session from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camps utilize the fields and athletic facilities at our Skiff Street Athletic Complex. This includes our heated pool at the Beckerman Athletic Center. For full-day Sports Camps, campers should bring their own snack, lunch, water bottle, bathing suit, and towel. Also, please check the camp descriptions listed below to make sure that your child is properly equipped for that particular camp. For outdoor sports in which cleats are used, campers should also bring a pair of sneakers to be used for indoor activities during periods of inclement weather.

Please be aware that every precaution is taken by our staff to avoid situations that may be dangerous to your child. However, unforeseen and unpredictable circumstances may arise that may expose your child to inherent risks associated with the sport in which he/she is participating.

If you have any questions about our Sports Camps, please contact Joe Fontana (jfontana@hamdenhall.org).

Sports Camps will be closed Monday, June 19th.
