  • The James R. Maggart Scholarship Fund


    Hamden Hall’s eighth head of school, James R. Maggart, passed away Nov. 19, 2021. Jim had served for 13 years under the pines before retiring in May 2004. Upon his retirement in 2004, Jim was surprised with news that his school community had established the James R. Maggart Scholarship Fund in his honor.

    Jim's fund supports the education of young women.

  • Edward M. "Ted" Shay, Class of 1977

    Edward M. Shay, Class of 1977, died peacefully on January 11, 2023 after a long battle with brain cancer. 

    Ted was born in the Morris Cove section of New Haven, and spent most of his childhood in Orange. At the time of his passing, he was living in Guilford with his wife, Sybil, and three children, Michael, Alexandra, and Teddy.

    Ted went on to graduate from Providence College with a business degree. Having a need to be active, he became an electrician. 

    Ted followed in his dad's footsteps and grew up playing hockey. He was a member of the Hamden Hall Hockey Teams where he formed a large group of life-long friends that stayed close. In 2018, Ted and his teammates were inducted into the Hamden Hall Sports Hall of Fame.

    Since his diagnosis last year, Ted had been meeting with his former Hamden Hall classmates and ice hockey teammates on a weekly basis. Those classmates included Nick O'Brien 1976, Peter Hiza 1977, Brian O'Connor 1977, Ron Petrillo 1977, Bill Cummings 1978, John McColl 1978, Mike Poole 1978, Bill Riegelmann 1978, Doug Theroux 1978, Paul Winch 1978, Bill Carroll 1979, Mike Sequino 1979, Mark Ward 1979, Charlie Corvi 1981, and former coach Bob Schroeder. As such, the friends had been meeting regularly to support Ted during his most challenging days.

  • Rear Admiral Clifford DeWolf, Class of 1946

    Rear Admiral Clifford DeWolf of Litchfield, Arizona, died on April 13, 2019, and is buried in the National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Clifford is an alumnus of the Hamden Hall Class of 1946. He was married to the former Marcia Staub of Waterford, Conn., and they had five children.

    Clifford, a native of New Haven, graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1950. He also attended Georgetown University where he earned a Juris Doctor Degree in 1957. Following his graduation from the Coast Guard Academy as an Ensign in 1950, he was subsequently promoted as follows: Lieutenant (junior grade) in 1952; Lieutenant in 1955; Lieutenant Commander in 1961; Commander on July 1, 1966; Captain on February 1, 1972. His date of rank as Rear Admiral began July 1, 1978. 

    He served aboard many Coast Guard cutters in his career, and was the Coast Guard's principal legislative counsel during the development and enactment of the Federal Boat Safety Act and the Ports and Waterways Safety Act.
    Prior to assuming command of the Thirteenth Coast Guard District, he was the Coast Guard's Chief Counsel.

    Admiral DeWolf's awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Coast Guard Commendation Medal.

  • Ruthann Beckerman, Past Grandparent

    Beloved Hamden Hall community member and past grandparent Ruthann Beckerman died peacefully at her home on Thursday, December 29, surrounded by family. Ruthann and her husband, legendary basketball coach and entrepreneur David Beckerman, had been married for 51 years.

  • Malachi "Max" Peters, Son of Alumna

    Malachi "Max" Peters of Branford died on Friday, December 16. He was 25. Max is survived by his parents Hamden Hall alumna Leslie Hopkins Peters, Class of 1983, and Theodore Peters III, and his brother, a former Hamden Hall student, Theodore Peters IV 2011.

    Ronald Francis Bozelko, 85, of Orange, died on December 2, 2022 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport after a long illness.

  • Kristina "Nina" Fugal Sancher, Class of 1963

    Kristina "Nina" Fugal Sancher, Hamden Hall Class of 1963, died unexpectedly on January 4. She was 76 years old and lived in Lamar, Texas with her husband of 53 years, Abe, whom she met on a blind date.

    Nina was born in New Haven. After graduating from Hamden Hall, she received her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport, and finished with a Masters in Education from the University of Utah, and went on to have a teaching career spanning 30 years. She and Abe married in 1968 and raised six children.

    A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, January 8 in Rockport, Texas.

  • Robert V. "Bob" Stefanowski Sr., Past Grandparent

    Robert V. "Bob" Stefanowski Sr. of North Haven, husband of the late Eleanor Dmuchowski Stefanowski, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 27, 2022. He was 92.

    Bob was well-known throughout the New Haven region as a stellar athlete. A soccer, basketball and baseball player at Hillhouse High School, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts and was voted "Most Athletic" in his 1948 graduating class. His athletic fame continued into his adulthood as he participated on a number of industrial league teams.

  • Mark Candido, Past Parent, Former Trustee

    Mark Candido of Hamden, died on November 22. He was 75. Mark was the father of Hamden Hall alumni Christopher Candido, Class of 1992, and David Candido, Class of 1996.

    He was also a past member of the Hamden Hall Board of Trustees. Besides his sons, Mark is survived by his wife Laurine, two brothers, a sister, and several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
