Elaine Lackman Smith 1946

Jodi Amatulli
After Elaine Lackman Smith, Hamden Hall Class of 1946, read an update by her classmate Mary Condon Varros 1946, Elaine also shared her news. She writes that it was a “pleasant surprise” to receive Mary’s news on life since Hamden Hall. “I very much remember Mary taking off for Trinity College in D.C. It was obviously a great choice and led to a wonderfully exciting and fulfilling life! Congratulations on all of it.”
Elaine continues that as it turned out, perhaps 20 years ago she met through work Saundra Oyewole, now a retired professor from Trinity (keep reading to understand the significance of that meeting). Saunda was an outstanding individual in her science field (biological sciences), and even now, retired, she is a member of the MCAT 2015 Committee representing undergraduate institutions. “Will any of us forget that memorable MCAT exam day back in 1944 or ’45?” Elaine quips.
Following Mrs. Westerfield’s advice, Elaine went to Wellesley College, majored in chemistry, and went on to a few research jobs, one at the Joslin Clinic in Boston, where she met her future husband, Howard Smith, a veterinarian. The couple settled in Lexington, Mass., where Howard started a practice, and they have remained in Lexington in their “original home—a beautiful town, filled with history.”
After they married, Elaine returned to Wellesley and earned a M.A. in chemistry and ultimately spent many years there teaching in the chemistry department, ultimately serving as Director of Medical Professions Advising (in which capacity she met Saundra Oweyole, working on a Consortium of Medical Schools and Women’s Colleges committee together.)

“I am, of course, retired for many years,” Elaine continued. “Howard is 93 and thriving fairly well. Some of you may remember my own brother, also named Howard, two years ahead of me—Hamden Hall Class of 1944—who settled in Arlington, Texas. (Most folks know that city now for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers!) My husband, Howard, and I have three children, living in Massachusetts, Florida and California, plus five grandchildren. I extend warmest good wishes to my classmates. I do remember all of you so very well. Arleen Bamberg Arnold and I remained close friends since Hamden Hall, and it was sad that she passed on perhaps five years ago. I will always appreciate Hamden Hall for all that it gave me.”
