George Vollano 1966 Shares Memory

Jodi Amatulli
George W. Vollano, Hamden Hall Class of 1966, is a recent retiree as Director of Fine Arts for the Stamford Public Schools and Department Chair of the Art Department at Westhill High School in Stamford. At the University of Pennsylvania, George was a member of the Penn Glee Club where he re-structured the organization to present shows instead of the traditional glee club concerts. Handel with Hair was the first and the musical shows still continue today! George has toured the United States and South America with the club. He has appeared at the Westport Country Playhouse, Hartman Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre, and in many productions of Godspell and Fiddler on the Roof. He has been Motel the Tailor in many times but says he is now ready for Tevye! George has directed shows for community groups and schools throughout Connecticut. This all stems from a melodrama during his student days Hamden Hall that started the ball rolling. He has been Scipio Africanus Major for the best teacher ever: Mrs. Westerfield, and he remembers the incredible trips to the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford (a site he recently visited to see the sad state of the abandoned theater). His partner, Andrew Knapp, is a set designer and they have shared a theatrical career for some 42 years. One of their hobbies is breeding and showing Borzoi, i.e., Russian Wolfhounds, in many shows including Westminster at Madison Square Garden. George is excited to return to Hamden Hall for his 50th Class Reunion in October. In fact, it will be his first reunion since his 1966 Hamden Hall graduation. We look forward to welcoming George back home!
