Directing in Hollywood!

Jodi Amatulli
Hamden Hall alumnus and theater director Dave Solomon 1995 is pleased to report that a world-premier play he’s directing had its first preview Jan. 21 in Hollywood in the Hudson Mainstage Theatre. Dave has been working on the staging of Diana Amsterdam's new play The Dodgers for a few years now with the playwright. The drama, that officially opens Jan. 30, tells the story about a group of musicians and friends facing the Vietnam draft lottery. It stars Corbin Bleu (High School Musical), Emma Hunton (Wicked) and Jared Gertner (The Book of Mormon). According the Playbill.com, the work “is a new American play set in 1969 about a tribe of nonconformist friends, who want nothing more than to make music, do drugs and make love. When they suddenly find that they must face a lottery, that will send at least one of them to Vietnam, it propels them to take daring and dangerous steps to dodge the draft.” Dave said that before the play headed to Los Angeles this month, it had some readings over the past two years in New York City (Dave’s home base). As for Dave, his resume as a director continues to build at an impressive pace. “I was (and still am) working with Bill Condon (who I did Side Show and, the film, Mr. Holmes with) on the new live action movie version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which we were filming in London. It stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Luke Evans, Audra McDonald, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci. It's a live action version of the musical that will be released in March 2017.  We were in London for eight months and filmed mostly at Shepperton Studios on some of the most incredible sets I have ever seen in my life.” Dave says due to a confidential agreement with Disney, he can’t reveal much more except that “I think the world is in for a treat!” In addition to The Dodgers, Dave’s other stage credits include Sunday in the Park with George[Broadway, 2008] Assistant Director; The Ritz[Broadway, 2007]Assistant Director;110 in the Shade[Broadway, 2007], Assistant Company Manager; Curtains[Broadway, 2007] Assistant Director; and Laugh Whore[Broadway, 2004]Production Assistant. Congratulations to Dave on his lasted accomplishment!
