Coach B Joins Elite Group with 500th Career Win

Legendary basketball coach David “Coach B” Beckerman earned yet another distinction this week as he amassed his 500th career win and joined an elite group to have garnered such a milestone.

Beckerman’s Varsity roster pulled off the feat Tuesday against King in a Fairchester League game played in Stamford.  The Hornets defeated King 74-44 and Coach B scored his 500th win.

“Winning 500 games is some measure of success, but to me the lifelong relationships with the students are far more important,” said Coach Beckerman, who celebrated with his players and their families after the game.

Back at home on Wednesday, the real celebration took place as the Hornets gathered for a home game against Storm King.  Prior to the game, Coach B was presented with the game ball signed by all of his players.  He also learned that the Number One jersey would be retired – similar to professional teams who have retired jerseys for coaches and owners – meaning that no player will ever bear the single digit again for the Hornets.

“We are beyond thrilled for David, especially given the fact that he was back at Hamden Hall when he scored his 500th career win,” said Head of School Bob Izzo.  “He has always been considered a legend on our campus and now his name will go down in the record books as one of a select number of coaches in the entire state to have achieved this accomplishment.”

Coach B’s first tenure under the pines was from 1993 to 2004.  During that period he garnered an impressive 252-60 record, won eight New England championships (six consecutively), six Fairchester championships, and was recognized as the New Haven Register’s Area Coach of the Year for the 1999-2000 season.  Post Hamden Hall, Coach B spent 11 years at The Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, where he continued his winning record.  With a record of 241-69, Pine Crest earned its first-ever Florida State Championship win, six consecutive trips to the State Final Four, six regional championships, and three state championships.  He was inducted into Hamden Hall’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

In deciding to return to his beloved Hornets for the 2015-2016 school year, Coach B noted that his goals were to “support the program, meet a personal goal of 500 wins while rebuilding the basketball tradition at the school, and at the same time serve as a helping force to the coaching staff.”  Despite it being only mid-season, it would seem that Coach B can check off all three of those objectives.
