A Call for Humanity by Amnesty International Members

Each year, people around the world come together for the Write for Rights Campaign by Amnesty International, a global letter-writing marathon advocating for human rights. Members of Hamden Hall’s chapter of Amnesty International penned a handful of letters advocating for social justice, promoting human rights, and showing solidarity with all.

Students gathered together in Whitson 23 with club advisor and English teacher Paul Gustafson to learn more about this year’s cases. Reading through the case sheets, the students wrote their letters on behalf of individuals from the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Australia, Myanmar, and more. The club hosted two writing sessions with letters sent off to government officials on behalf of the individual. The objective was freedom for those who have been unjustly imprisoned and a desire to seek justice for human rights abuses.

“The campaign and letter-writing allows for us to use our voice and it’s important that we fight for these peoples rights and make sure that they aren’t forgotten,” said senior Shaina Patel. “Our voice is a part of who we are and without it we are forced to follow what someone else tells us to, regardless of whether it’s right or wrong. I wanted to help be a part of this change and speak out against these injustices that are happening around the world, and hopefully through these letters, we are able to make a difference in their lives.” 

According to Mr. Gustafson, Hamden Hall has been taking part in this campaign for 13 years - one of the most vital campaigns in which the club participates. He noted that words have the power to change someone’s life and the work of writing letters can give a voice to the individuals and be a catalyst for the support and help they ultimately need.

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning global movement of more than 10 million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates, and mobilizes the public and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth, and dignity are denied.
