Sixth-Graders Celebrated and Deemed Well-Prepared for Middle School

For a unique school year that required flexibility, sixth-graders rose to the challenge as acknowledged during their recent Grade 6 Graduation ceremony.

“It took a village – our Hamden Hall village – that included our teachers, students, parents, and staff to get to this point, safely and successfully. It has been a memorable and truly amazing year, and we are excited to celebrate the students in front of me with all of you,” said Director of Lower School Lorri Carroll.

The graduates watched a slideshow of themselves throughout their Lower School years and performed the song, Stand By Me, during the ceremony, which was held outdoors at the Skiff Street Athletic Complex. They also received some advice from Head of School Bob Izzo, who started his remarks by thanking the students’ parents for their “significant investment” in their child’s education.

“You will be known as the Class of 2027,” said Mr. Izzo. “You will experience more freedom and more independence, but with that comes more responsibility.”

Parents on hand for the ceremony chuckled at hearing the guidance their children offered to those who will take their place in next year’s sixth-grade class. From advising their peers to “stay out of drama and finish your work” to the assertion that they will “like the sixth-grade projects,” the rising seventh-graders sounded and appeared confident in their forthcoming transition to Middle School.

“There comes a time each spring when my daily visits to the sixth-grade classrooms become reflective moments when I imagine what these students will be like as Middle Schoolers. Have we done everything we can to prepare them,” questioned Mrs. Carroll. “One particular day last week, I visited the Whitson hallway and stopped in my tracks because it was the moment I knew. I just knew they were ready.”

Twenty-seven students received diplomas. The ceremony was also live-streamed for those who could not be in attendance

“It’s clear, parents, that our sixth-graders are well on their way to making the world a better place,” said Mr. Izzo.
