Middle School Math Enthusiasts Qualify to Compete

Four Middle School students have qualified to compete in the Invitational Chapter Competition following their participation in an area event. The 2021 Mathcounts Chapter Invitational Competition takes place online this evening via the AoPS (Art of Problem Solving) Contest Platform. The competition involves a 90-minute test.

Eighth-graders Eric Huang and Alexander Yi along with seventh-graders Leon Jiang and Ravindu Karunaratne were among the top 20 percent of students from the Greater New Haven area who now move on to the Invitational competition. Additionally, Leon was presented a plaque for taking third place in the chapter event.

According to Mathcounts Coach Maria Agulian, who also chairs the Mathematics Department, Hamden Hall was one of two schools from among all participating Greater New Haven area middle schools who had this number of students advance to the Invitational Chapter Competition.

In all, Hamden Hall had 15 students who participated in the initial Mathcounts chapter competition. Since the beginning of the school year, members of the Mathcounts team, which totals 25, have been learning how to solve hundreds of problems in number theory, algebra, probability, geometry, and other mathematics subjects.
“Moving forward, we will continue to build our skills and continue to learn,” maintained Mrs. Agulian.
