MSI Club Creates Recipe for School-Wide Celebration

The creation of a multicultural cookbook will celebrate our school community through food.

The school-wide project is hosted by the MSI, the Multicultural Student Interests Club. Faculty and students are encouraged to submit recipes for the planned digital publication.

“We came up with this idea because we know that the pandemic has been very isolating, and we thought food would be a great way to bring people together. We couldn't organize a potluck, but we realized that a recipe book would be a great way to safely allow our community to connect during the pandemic,” said MSI president and senior Nathaniel Thomas.

Deadline for submissions is March 13. Distribution of the cookbook is planned for spring.

Ideas for recipe submissions include those “that are meaningful to you. They can be passed down through your family or have some significance to you,” according to the sign-up sheet.

Students are encouraged to ask their parents and relatives for recipes that come to mind, with a postscript that recipes do not have to be “typical ethnic food.”

“We will even accept special smoothies or tea recipes,” instructions state.

According to World Language Dept. Chair Yasmin Haque, who co-advises the club with Student Equity Advocate Krysi Crimley, the idea for the cookbook came from the students. 

“They planned the cookbook as a way to share family recipes – a virtual potluck –and represent the different cuisines represented in our community,” said Ms. Haque.  

Besides distributing the cookbook via digital platform, similar to an eBook, Nathaniel said the club is also looking into options to produce a hard copy. 

“It is so important to maintain a sense of community during the pandemic, and this project is MSI’s way of doing just that,” maintained Nathaniel.
