Rho Kappa Hosts Voter Registration Drive

Members of Rho Kappa performed a public service on campus recently by encouraging their teachers and peers – those who are at least 18 years old – to vote on Election Day.

By hosting a voter registration drive, members of the National Social Studies Honor Society brought awareness of the need to register in advance of Election Day on November 3. Students set up a table in the courtyard and provided a QR code to the Connecticut Voter Registration website. Directions to navigate the website were also provided.

According to Rho Kappa President, senior Josh Mukherjee, many students who stopped by the registration drive are eager to vote – they just aren’t old enough!

“We also had a few absentee ballot applications printed out to accommodate for COVID-19 and instructions on how to fill those out,” he said.

Rho Kappa advisor Dr. Lisa Hill noted that honor society members came to her with the idea of providing voter registration assistance. She said students researched the idea on their own and went from there on the details.

“I am very proud of my students taking this initiative. Regardless of what part of the political spectrum you embrace, the act of voting is a privilege and should never be dismissed when/if you are able to exercise this right,” maintained Dr. Hill.

Even though the drive itself is over, Josh stated that QR codes have been posted on building doors around campus. By scanning the code on a personal device, the individual is taken directly to the voter registration page. Prospective voters have until Oct. 27 to register to vote.
