Hornets Dunk Beaver in NEPSAC Quarterfinal

Bud Kohler
Fresh from their thrilling double overtime victory to capture the Fairchester League title, Boys Varsity Basketball swarmed into action on Wednesday evening and stung Beaver Country Day from Chestnut Hill, Mass. 81-71 in a New England Tournament Quarterfinal.

The #2 seeded Hornets started strong against a very talented Beaver squad, which boasted a DI recruit and one of the top rated freshmen in the country. With their patented high octane offense and a suffocating defense all over the court, the Hornets surged into a solid 40-29 lead by half.

The packed Beckerman Center really got rocking in the second frame, when the Hornets put on a devastating aerial display of dunks, capped by Tre Breland's thunderous tomahawk/ windmill/helicopter (you pick) slam that sent the crowd into a frenzy, yelling for more. And when Breland and Christian Adams weren't living over the rim, they found nothing but net from the outside. Meanwhile, Tim Dawson and Jackson Begnini sliced through the Beaver defense, with Begnini putting on a dazzling array of audacious reverse layups. Despite their talent, Beaver could find no response, though they finished strong to whittle away some of the insurmountable lead down the stretch. Jakhai Pettway worked hard under the boards and Chris Cahill also provided plenty of energy at both ends of the court.

Senior captain Tim Dawson remarked after the strong display, “We couldn’t be stopped offensively tonight and we kept applying pressure on defense to shut them down. A great Team win." Coach Doherty added, "I was proud of our guys, especially Tim Dawson who I thought had a great all around game! The guys were all locked in from start to finish which helped us beat a very good Beaver Country Day squad.”

Jackson Begnini was the top scorer on the night with 22 points. Tre Breland and Tim Dawson had 19 each and Christian Adams right behind them with 18.

With the win, the Hornets advance to the semifinals and will host the Brooks School from Andover, Mass. on Saturday evening. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30. Should the Hornets advance, they would play on Sunday in the final at 5 p.m. at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. So clear the calendar and come out Saturday to watch the Hornets soar again!
