Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Brent Matza 1999

Class of 1999 alumnus Dr. Brent Matza remains steadfast in his dedication to patient care as he works as a board-certified physician at CityMD in New York City.

“I chose to pursue a career in medicine primarily in urgent care because I like the fast-paced nature, the variety of cases, and doing procedures,” said Brent. “The spontaneity of it all is what attracted me to the field as each day is different from the next.”

Brent graduated from Colgate University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematical economics and pre-med. After graduation, he moved to Boston and worked on an ambulance as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) before pursuing his master’s degree in Medical Sciences at Boston University. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Stony Brook University on Long Island, N.Y.

Brent noted that working in urgent care is a unique endeavor as he treats patients of all ages with different illnesses and injuries. Furthermore, he works diligently to provide high-quality and compassionate care to help patients feel better when they are ill. In addition to in-person consultations and care, he does telemedicine and enjoys treating urgent care from a virtual platform.

Brent has had the distinct honor of being academically published in more than a dozen medical journals. Outside of work, Brent is an avid golfer and joined in the Hamden Hall Golf Tournament and Auction last June. He enjoys working out, specifically weight lighting and high intensity cardio. During the winter months, he said he prefers to travel to Florida and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico for rest and relaxation.
