Mystic Mateys Showcase Nautical-Themed Knowledge
The annual Mystic Festival featured student-led activities by our fourth- and fifth-graders showcasing the knowledge they’ve learned over the course of the school year.
Grade four teacher Emily Schimelman, Class of 2002, kicked off the festivities and welcomed students, families, and other visitors. She noted that by visiting each "booth," which were spread out among Whitson classrooms, Taylor Gymnasium, and the courtyard, participants would get a clearer understanding of the learning process involved in the Mystic program.
"These are hands-on, engaging activities and you will get a better sense of how we learn here at Hamden Hall," she said.
Activities included “pin the room on the ship,” Origami whale-making, a navigational scavenger hunt, potato printing, and more. Lower School peers of the Mystic classes were able to participate and learn at many of the booths as their teachers brought them around the festival area.
The Mystic Seaport program is a dynamic and innovative collaboration with the popular maritime history attraction. Mystic educators combine in-class lessons and activities for our fourth- and fifth-graders with onsite travels to the ship yard. As a two-year partnership, content differs by grade. In fourth-grade, the focus is “Life at Sea,” combining simulation activities along with primary source analysis. Meanwhile, in the fifth-grade, students take part in a very hands-on, yearlong, “Seaport Town Apprenticeship” program. The results are cross-curricular, highly interactive monthly programs that are varied and project-based in areas such as geography, nautical science, American history, technology, and more.
Hamden Hall has partnered with Mystic since the 2012-2013 school year.
