The English Department hosts noted writer Andre Dubus III for a reading of his work and a discussion of the writing process for the inaugural lecture of what will be an annual Visiting Writer program. The Visiting Writer program will coincide with our new Junior Writing Portfolio program.
Dubus, a
NY Times bestselling novelist, will be on campus Wednesday, April 5.
“Mr. Dubus is a well-known author whose book,
House of Sand and Fog, was nominated for a National Book Award. We have asked him to read from his coming-of-age memoir,
Townie, and we're asking students and faculty who have the time to read one (or both!) of these books,” said English Department Chair Paul Gustafson.
The Junior Writing Portfolio program is a new initiative that supports and promotes excellence in writing. Juniors will submit a portfolio of their best writing – five polished pieces – which will be assessed by a committee made up of Hamden Hall teachers and outside assessors. The portfolio may include superlative writing from students’ sophomore and junior years, and potentially, from other departments. The portfolio allows students the opportunity to gather and revise their best Upper School writing and present it to a panel, who will provide feedback.
Students whose portfolios receive an “exemplary” assessment will be given special commendation, possibly including being published in a yearly magazine. The primary objective of this new requirement is to give students the opportunity to think about their growth as a writer and to have readers other than the student’s current teacher respond to their work, according to Mr. Gustafson.
This year, the committee for the Junior Writing Portfolio Program meets April 18 and 19.
