The Skiff Street Athletic Fields were filled with laughter, interactive discussions, and team-bonding activities and games as the freshman class and the 12 seniors selected for the Peer Leadership Program partook in Activity Day.
The 2023-2024 Peer Leaders are Casey Armstrong, Charles Botsman, Jake Cacace, Will Christman, Tyler Gibson Sarah Marro, Monte Meng, Elizabeth O'Hern, Mason Rickey, Jaden Rossi, Sally Temeur, and Gabi Velez.
“I chose to apply for Peer Leadership because I wanted to serve as a mentor to the underclassmen and make sure both new and returning students always feel welcome,” said Gabi. “It’s great to have an opportunity to be a supportive outlet and help students who may feel nervous or unsure become more open and enjoy their Hamden Hall experience.”
With new faculty co-advisors Charlie Alexander and Tricia Dowcett overseeing the program, the freshmen were broken up into six groups with two designated Peer Leaders for different activities. The day began with introductions and icebreakers where the students discussed the history and significance of their names as a way to connect with one another on a more personal level. The Peer Leaders also led an in-depth discussion session about various personal topics meant to break down barriers and create engaging dialogue.
Other activities included the mafia game; the human knot game where everyone formed a circle, grabbed a different hand, and worked together to untangle themselves; and pass the question where each student answered the same question with the goal of getting to know one another better.
“The Peer Leadership Program is an enriching experience for all involved as the seniors become a support system for the freshmen,” said Ms. Dowcett. “Some students may feel more comfortable going to their Peer Leader with their concerns, and having built-in mentors allows them to become more comfortable having open discussions and ultimately becoming more invested in the school community.”
Established in 1989, the Princeton Peer Leadership Program serves as a valuable student network and mentoring opportunity that allows new and returning freshmen to learn more about the school community through the guidance of senior student leaders. The Peer Leaders meet throughout the year with their freshman groups for advisory sessions, mentoring workshops, and hands-on projects. The year-long program fosters leadership development and streamlines student success for endeavors beyond the halls.
