Hamden Hall Country Day School
Educating Students in PreSchool Through Grade 12

Honoring Veterans Day Under the Pines

Grade 3 students in teachers Alexis Harris 2001 and Katherine Temple’s class participated in the second annual The Poppy Project in art class with teacher Sue Bennett 1973, where they made red watercolor cut-out poppy flower collages. The students also wrote personal thank-you notes to veterans expressing their appreciation. Attached to the notes were bags of toy soldiers. All the notes and multimedia collages were delivered to the Whitney Center in Hamden.

Other Lower School activities included PreSchool and PreKindergarten students listening to the story, What is Veterans Day?, after learning about the holiday in class with teacher Kathleen Swenning. Student also worked with teacher Molly Meka on a collaborative poppy project. Kindergarten students created tissue paper heart collages and first-grade students welcomed guest Steven Caron, the cousin of teacher Beth Messina 1996, for an in-class visit where he spoke about his military service as a member of the Marine Corps.
