Kindergartners Boogie Woogie For Fun Fall Performance

Kindergarten students got into the spooky season spirit as they donned graphic purple, green, and orange shirts with spider webs, witches hats, pumpkins, and ghosts for a fall performance in the Taylor Arts Performing Center for families and their fifth-grade buddies.

With Lower School music teacher Rachael Jungkeit on the keyboard, the students opened the show with a song titled Autumn Leaves followed by Pick A Pumpkin and Five Little Bats. The interactive performance welcomed an array of autumn- and Halloween-themed songs with musical instruments including the xylophone and wooden sound tube. The final song was the Boogie Woogie Ghost, which they performed in step with their buddies.

“We look forward to the first performance each year, and the students were really excited to have their parents in the audience and perform with their buddies,” said Kindergarten teacher Jenna Gabriel.

The morning fun didn’t end there – students and their families moved over to the Dining Hall for an art show and reception. On the tables were hand-drawn and colored pumpkin outlines on canvas backgrounds and pumpkins with paint splashes of white and black dots. The designs on the pumpkins were inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama, who is known for her use of extensive dots and the artist of study in class. All the art projects were completed in class with art teacher Sue Bennet 1973. Students also enjoyed some coloring activities on one of the back tables while enjoying their snacks.

To further stimulate their imagination and creativity, the students worked with Lower School science teacher Claire Rich in their Makerspace class to create paper pumpkins. Using orange construction paper, the students cut, folded, and molded the paper into pumpkin shapes. Green construction paper was used for a leaf to top off the pumpkins. Mrs. Rich noted the students learned how to take a flat piece of paper and change it into a new shape.
