Baseball Takes 2 of 3; At the Hop in FAA 1st Round

The Varsity Baseball team enjoyed a successful week, sandwiching wins over Greens Farms and St. Luke’s with a setback against league leader King in between. On Monday, the Hornets spotted the visiting Dragons a run in the top of the 1st inning before responding with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. The game remained tight till HH tallied three more in the bottom of the 6th with numerous extra base hits. Juniors Billy Gioulos and Joe Liucci both did damage by legging out a triple and knocking in a run each. Fellow junior, CJ Kuselias ripped a double and a triple, while senior catcher, Shaun Hillis, added 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Senior hurler, Jack DiMatteo limited GFA to a single hit and improved his record to 2-2 on the season.

Unfortunately, the Hornets had to turn right around on Tuesday and travel to Stamford to face off against first place King School. Though the Hornets battled stubbornly, the host Vikings came out on top 5-2. Ryan Doherty still impressed, striking out 9 in the losing effort, while senior Mike Wajdowicz hammered a double and knocked in the two Hornet runs.

On Thursday, the Hornets returned the favor with a 5-2 win of their own over visiting St. Luke’s. Freshman gunslinger, Dan Carbone, pitched a complete game 3 hitter, while striking out 8! Billy Gioulos had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Additional RBI hits by CJ Kuselias, Safi Wazaz, and Mike Wajdowicz rounded out the scoring. With the victory, the Hornets qualified for the FAA tournament and will travel crosstown to play Hopkins on Monday at 4:30. The last time the two teams met, the Hornets jumped out to an impressive 5-0 lead in the 1st inning before eventually succumbing to the Hilltoppers, so Coach Fontana’s squad will hope to start strong and also finish strong this time around.
