"Sunny" Spring Update

The weather might not be ideal, but the spring season is well underway and several Hornet teams are basking in whatever sun appears. Girls Lacrosse boasts an undefeated 3-0 record. They opened up with a spectacular 15-7 win over visiting King School of Stamford this past Saturday. In an all-around team effort, seven different Hornets got on the scoreboard. Senior captain Maisa DellaValle and freshman Claire Shemo led the way with 4 goals apiece. Sophomore Molly Anderson and junior captain Karis Curtis each had 2 tallies, while seniors Justyna Breuler, Cassie Delfini, and Miranda Iannone each chipped in a goal. The strong defensive effort on Saturday was led by senior goalie, Kayleigh Giles, who was stellar in stopping seven Viking shots. Seniors Abby Malin, Nat Pinela and Claire Pancoast, and junior Maddy Malin were all part of a suffocating defensive unit. On Monday, the Hornets staged a thrilling come-from-behind victory, edging FAA rival Holy Child 15-14.  Freshman star Claire Shemo again tallied four for the Hornets, as did Karis Curtis and Molly Anderson. Justyna Breuler added two and Maisa DellaValle chipped in one. Kayleigh Giles made 10 saves, and the defense held Holy Child scoreless for the final 14 minutes for the dramatic comeback win. The girls continued their roll with a convincing win over Storm King School 16-4. Curtis again recorded four goals, Shemo scored three, while Alex Johnson, Iannone, and Breuler got on the stat sheet with two goals apiece. Della Valle scored one, as did Abby Malin and Cassie Delfini. The Hornets outshot the Cougars 27-10.
Boys Lacrosse also has earned three wins, including victories over Wooster School and crosstown rival Hopkins. The relatively young team stumbled on the road at Canterbury, but rebounded with a 10-5 victory over FAA foe St. Luke’s on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets’ offense has plenty of potential but has sputtered at times. After a tight first half, the Hornets began to gel and dominate the Storm. Alex DiVincentis scored a hat trick and Kai Bruneau, Matt Stapleton and Griffin Elliott each added two goals to pace the Hornet attack. Bruneau’s brace, coming round from the goalie’s blind side, were both the result of the kind of excellent ball movement that Coach Kevin Warnock has been calling for. The defense, led by standout Sam Jewett between the pipes, and longsticks Ryan Delfini, Reese Perrone, and eighth grader, Konye Taylor, also looked very sharp in the second frame. Jackson Lalond has returned from injury to win faceoffs, while Chase Lilly and Jeff Nugent help direct the offense as the Hornets seek to hit their stride.
Three seems to be the magic number, as Varsity Baseball has a trio of wins offset by two losses. Having opened up with the 3-1 win against Choate, the Hornets bested GFA 11-0 and then St. Luke’s 4-1 on the road. Kal Gonzales gave up only one run in the fourth inning, and Joe Liucci came on in relief to calm the Storm. Brendan Casey hit a double; Mike Gulia, Shaun Hillis, Billy Gioulos, and Liucci each had an RBI, while CJ Kuselias had 2 hits in the FAA league win. Unfortunately, the Hornets were derailed by Rye 3-1 on Saturday and Hopkins 9-0 on Wednesday, but hope to rebound on Friday down at Brunswick.
The Varsity Golf team has looked impressive indeed on the links thus far. In a tight match on Wednesday at Lyman Meadows CC, the Hornets topped Choate and Pomfret 213-217-224. Eighth grader Ben James, a New Haven Register All Area selection last year as a seventh grader, was the medalist in the nine hole match, recording a score of 37. The rest of the team was clutch, with Jackson Roman shooting 39, Max Sinoway 42, Ethan Springhorn 46, and Nolan Richards 49. Then on Thursday, in a dual meet, the Hornets comfortably topped King School 209-237 at the New Haven Country Club. Ben James was again atop the leaderboard with a 35, followed by Max Sinoway with a 40, Jackson Roman 41, Mitchell Swick 46,and Nolan Richards 47. At this rate, Coach Keith Kaliszewski could care less if the sun does not come out on Match Day.
Girls Tennis Won 4-3 over Sacred Heart of Greenwich at home. The three top singles - Lexy McKay, Hannah Flamm, and Christina LoRicco - each won. However, all three doubles lost. So it came down to a very long match at # 4 singles. With everyone from both sides watching and cheering, Junior Shaw Mettler lost her first set, pulled out the second set, then came back in a thrilling 10 point tie breaker, 10-4, to win the match for HH.
There’s a rumor that warm weather lies ahead. Regardless, the Hornets are already buzzing!
