Richard “Dick” Dolven, Former Headmaster and Past Parent

Former Headmaster Richard “Dick” Dolven, of Palm Springs, Calif., died on May 11. He was 93.
Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara, and three children, Timothy Dolven, Peter Dolven, Hamden Hall alumnus, Class of 1979, and Jessica Dolven Ott, Hamden Hall alumna, Class of 1988.

As a graduate student at Yale Divinity School, Dick was hired by Hamden Hall to teach chemistry and algebra in the afternoons during the 1956-1957 school year. In 1977, he returned to Hamden Hall and served as Headmaster through 1991. During his tenure, he oversaw the reconfiguration of our Whitney Avenue campus and secured a 20-year lease from the Regional Water Authority for 12 acres of athletic fields - all of which are now part of our Skiff Street Athletic Complex. He was an educator at heart and continued to teach such courses as chemistry, ethics, and a Bible-study course during his tenure as Headmaster.

The Hamden Hall community extends sincere condolences to the Dolven family. There is no obituary available at this time. When one becomes available, a link will be posted to this article. Please check back.
