Samuel “Sam” Genecin, Class of 2010, offered our Upper Schoolers some tips for having a successful run at college during a recent assembly. Sam returned to Hamden Hall at the invitation of Head of School Bob Izzo. Sam graduated from Yale University in 2014 with a B.A. in economics. In the fall, he will pursue a Juris Doctorate at Stanford Law School at Stanford University, located in the Silicon Valley near Palo Alto, Calif. “After four years in the private sector, I am ready to return to an academic setting where I can further explore my interests in public service, academic research, and corporate governance,” Sam said. “I was strongly influenced by Hamden Hall's emphasis on integrity and accountability.” Sam said he continues to reflect on those values and strives to uphold them in his professional, academic, and personal activities. As for Hamden Hall teachers who made an impact on Sam, he noted Tom Butler’s history and economics classes. Tom retired in 2010, the same year Sam graduated as valedictorian of his class. “Mr. Butler was instrumental in nurturing my original interest in economics and finance during the global financial crisis of 2007 to 2009,” Sam said. Sam also gave a nod to English teachers Bill Hunter, Paul Gustafson, and Helen Barnstable. “They helped me to develop a passion for research and writing, which undoubtedly influenced my decision to pursue a legal career,” Sam said. As for some practical advice about college, Sam urged the Upper Schoolers to not only research coursework but instructors as well. “Your teachers can make all the difference,” he said. Take some risks—some challenging courses—but don’t be afraid to backtrack and take some basic classes if that’s what’s needed to succeed. Additionally, Sam urged the students to strike a healthy balance between studies and a social life—work hard but find some time to enjoy the journey.
