As Head of School Bob Izzo was recently researching files, he made a delightful discovery! In September 1990, the Hamden Hall Board of Trustees honored longtime member and past president Alan I. Mossberg with the distinction of Trustee Emeritus.

At once, we updated our records, and Hamden Hall is pleased to share news of a recent visit to Alan and his wife, Jayne, in their beautiful home in Tierra Verde, Fla.

Alan still is president of O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., and he and Jayne are involved in school, civic, and church activities—both in Connecticut and Florida. The Mossbergs were honored to receive the State Seal of Florida for entertaining the Anatoly Sobchak, the mayor of St. Peterburg’s, Russia, and his wife during their visit to Florida’s St. Pete in 1994.

In Connecticut, Alan devoted his talent and time to Hamden Hall, as well as the Hospital of St. Raphael’s Foundation Board and the Grace Episcopal Church in Hamden. Back in Florida, Alan is a trustee emeritus of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. Alan and Jayne’s daughter, Linnea, who worked with our own Katharine Harris as an assistant teacher in PreKindergarten, is an Eckerd alumna. Linnea and her husband, Bijan (also an Eckerd alum), live in Tierra Verde with their son, Trevor, and daughter, Emily.

Alan and Jayne’s three other children are Hamden Hall alumni: Gretchen Mossberg Highsmith 1975 and her husband, David, live in North Haven and have two daughters, Alexandria and Bethanie; Alan “Iver” Mossberg 1978 of Branford (CEO of O.F. Mossberg & Sons) has three daughters: Karly is a 2005 Hamden Hall graduate, Tara 2004 attended Hamden Hall, and Alanna; and Jonathan Mossberg 1983 and his wife, Sharon, live in Branford, and have a son, Oskar, and daughter, Alida.

Alan and Jayne enjoyed sharing fond memories of Hamden Hall, beginning with Alan’s invitation to join the Board of Trustees in the mid-1960s by the late F.Morgan "Buzz" Taylor Jr. After 24 years of service to the board (of which Alan served as president for 17 years—retiring in 1988!), he invited Terry Swain, now also a trustee emeritus, to join the governing team at Hamden Hall. Terry, also a past parent and current Hamden Hall grandparent, is looking forward to Alan’s visit to Connecticut this spring and giving Alan a tour of our new Beckerman Athletic Center! Alan was instrumental in the original lease of land, now home to the Skiff Street Athletic Complex.

Both Alan and Jayne spoke warmly about the late Headmaster Jerry Whitson, and working with Viola DeMusis—among many board members—on projects to improve the school. The couple spoke fondly of their children’s friends and teachers at Hamden Hall, with Jayne remembering Bob Hyde as one who was especially influential in her children’s lives (we’re working on a mini reunion—bringing Bob back to campus when Jayne is here!).

During a tender moment, Jayne was struck when she took a closer look at the framed watercolor of Hamden Hall that Bob Izzo sent to her and Alan. She recognized the signature of the late painter Mark Johnson, who was her dear friend and Branford neighbor. The Mossbergs plan to display the watercolor in their Florida home, which, by the way, was originally built for the musical group Abba (just an interesting tidbit that Jodi Amatulli couldn’t resist sharing!).

Alan and Jayne love living in Florida, where they enjoy many friendships. When the Mossbergs come “back home” in spring, we look forward to renewing their friendship and welcome their visit to Hamden Hall.
