Cited as the biggest event Hamden Hall has ever held, the Centennial Gala at New Haven’s Omni Hotel Saturday evening featured 400 guests celebrating an academic institution’s spirit, fortitude, and commitment to excellence.
“I’d like to point out that 1912 was obviously a very good year for top-notch, big league organizations to establish themselves. Hamden Hall's centennial anniversary is in very good company with such heavy hitters as Fenway Park, the Girl Scouts, L.L. Bean, and the Oreo cookie,” said Head of School Bob Izzo in his opening remarks.
From there, proclamations were made – both state and federal – the Yale University a cappella group The Whiffenpoofs performed the school song and alma mater, and the school’s first coffee-table book, Under the Pines, was unveiled.
“The large turnout tonight is a perfect example of the strength of the commitment that our community members make to the school and to each other. You are all honored guests this evening—current and former parents, current and former faculty and staff, alumni, current and past members of the Board of Trustees, and friends,” said Bob.
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro personally delivered a federal proclamation in honor of Hamden Hall’s centennial, which stated in part, “Hamden Hall is an exceptional institution for learning and I have no doubt that it will continue to shape the lives of our young people for generations to come.”
Also on hand was current Board of Trustees President Joyce Lujic and Trustee Emeritus John Edwards, former Headmaster Jim Maggart, and Dr. Doug Lyons, executive director of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools. The evening’s corporate sponsor, Quinnipiac Bank & Trust Company, was represented by President and CEO Mark Candido, a Hamden Hall past parent.
“It’s an honor for us to be a part of this community,” said John Edwards who traveled from Hilton Head with his wife, Debbie, for the event. “Hamden Hall has been and will always be a special place to me and my family.”
The evening was also marked by dancing to a live band, a candy bar featuring treats and sweets from yesteryear, and a portrait studio for attendees to forever preserve the significance of the event.
“I think this is the biggest event Hamden Hall has ever had,” said Dr. Sanda Lujic Tomak 1989, whose three children attend their mom’s alma mater as do Sanda’s nieces and nephews.
The event was planned by a Gala Committee that Bob referred to as the “Dream Team,” consisting of current parents, Lisa Consiglio, Christine Fontana, Laurie-Ann Letizia, and Susan Lewin.
