    Hornets Rock Woodstock

    Bud Kohler
On Saturday, Boys Varsity Basketball earned a huge come-from-behind 94-90 win against Woodstock Academy in overtime at the National BasketBULL Tourney in Springfield, MA. With good reason the talented Woodstock squad already boasted a 12-2 record for the season and challenged the Hornets throughout the contest. The Hornets again fell behind against a talented foe, only to finish with a flourish. Trailing 67-51 early in the second half, the team kept battling to the end. The game went back and forth in the last two minutes, when Christian Adams made a big clutch three pointer to send the game into overtime. Junior Jackson Benigni was tremendous all game, leading all scorers with 41 points.
“I was so impressed with the way our guys stayed focused once again and never let the score bother them, " said Coach Doherty. "Our relentless attitude paid off late in the game and guys stepped up and made big plays when really needed! The key word for tonight’ was Resiliency. Our team character was tested early, but we maintained our focus throughout in order to get the win, added Christian Adams.
The Hornets are now 8-0 and play Wednesday, December 19, against FAA league rival Masters School of NY - the only league loss the Hornets experienced last year.

  • Hornets Tame Cats and Douse Dragons in FAA Match-ups

    Bud Kohler
Hamden Hall Boys’ Varsity Basketball headed out on the road to square off against some stiff FAA league competition this week and emerged with two critical wins. On Monday, the Hornets played at Rye Country Day School and defeated the hosts 76-57. The contest was much tougher than the final score might suggest. The Wildcats came roaring out of the gates, ready to compete, and kept the game in balance for more than three quarters. Constant pressure from the Hornets, however, finally got to them with about 10 minutes left, when the Hornets went on a 14-2 run to take the bite out of the Cats and put the game out of reach. “In the first half we came a little slow, but second half we got back to Hamden Hall basketball, creating turnovers leading to easy baskets, which was a huge part in getting the road win,” said junior Jackson Benigni, who finished with 21 points. The Hornets got well balanced scoring from all the starters, including 17 from both Christian Adams and Tim Dawson, and 13 from Tre Breland, that eventually helped put the Hornets over the top. Pleased with the gritty play, Coach Sean Doherty said, “These are the type of hard fought road wins that really help guys gain confidence in league play. I thought the squad played great together and made some big plays when it was really needed. Now it’s on to GFA.”
The bus headed back down I-95 again on Wednesday evening for a showdown with Greens Farms Academy of Westport. Two Dragon stars had just signed letters of intent to play in college, so everyone knew this would be a potential preview of the two top teams in the Fairchester League. To no one’s surprise, the game was a barn burner from start to finish throughout regulation, with the Hornets prevailing in OT 76-67.
Tre Breland led the way with 21 points and said afterwards, “We didn’t play the way we wanted to play today early on. But I felt the team and coaches did a great job keeping us focused on task when it got tight. Jahkai (Pettway) and Chris (Cahill) stepped up big today; it was needed.“
The Dragons looked to be sending HH to their first defeat, first taking a 33-27 halftime lead, and then extending it to 55-44 in the second half. However, the Hornets rallied and closed out the second frame with a 16-5 run to force overtime. In the extra period, the Hornets took control and put out the Dragons’ fire. Jackson Benigni added 19 points for the Hornets, Christian Adams added 13 and Jakki Pettway finished with 10 points.
“Our guys never gave up even when they were down 11,” said Coach Doherty. “Our veterans, they are not used to losing and they kept on being resilient in our press. And they (Greens Farms) started to throw the ball all over the place. And then we started making the shots that we missed in the first half.”
The team remains not only undefeated in league play at 3-0, but are now 7-0 overall. Saturday they play non-league opponent Woodstock Academy.

  • Wrestlers Sweep the Mat - Twice!

    Bud Kohler
Varsity Wrestling is truly on a roll, and enjoyed another superb week where they showed their prowess against an array of opponents, most of whom are bigger schools. On Saturday, the Hornets traveled to Springfield, Mass. where they defeated host Wilbraham & Monson Academy 41-36, Williston-Northampton 51-6, and Eagle Hill 51-12.
On Wednesday, the Hornets were equally impressive and successful when they traveled to the Salisbury School. The team started out against Forman School, winning 48-24, 5-0 on the mat. They then narrowly bested Suffield Academy 42-36; 4-1 on the mat. They then defeated the hosts 48-30; 4-1 on the mat, to complete the sweep.
With these victories, the Hornets are now a stunning 9-2 on the season! On Saturday, the team will compete individually at the Oxford Invitational against a variety of public school opponents. Congratulations and good luck to Coach Blair Tugman and the team.

  • Boys Hoops Remains Undefeated!

    Bud Kohler
The Hornet Swarm continues for Boys Varisty Basketball. On Saturday, they earned a hard fought, quality win over the Dexter School from Brookline, Mass, another strong New England non-league opponent, 76-73. Dexter have three players that are getting Division 1 recruiting looks and they made the Hornets work on every possession. The game was a nail bitter from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and unable to pull away. Ther Hornets were just a bit quicker and as a result gained the edge at the free throw line, going 21 for 31. “ We needed our veterans to step up tonight against a tough opponent and that’s what they did, " said Coach Sean Doherty. "Tre Breland was tremendous on both ends of the floor tonight leading all scorers with 29."  Eventually, the full court pressure took its toll on the Dexter squad, forcing some costly turnovers down the stretch.
The Hornets are back in action on Monday at Rye Country Day in another FAA matchup.

    Tre Breland 10 8-16 29

    Tim Dawson 3  2-2 10
    Christian Adams  7 4-4 19
    Jackson Benigni 4 7-9 16

  • Boys Hoops Tops the Hop!

    Bud Kohler
After a highly successful weekend during which they recorded three convincing victories, the Boys Varsity basketball team returned to the Beckerman Center on Tuesday evening to enjoy a bit of home cooking and another solid win, this time against crosstown rival Hopkins. The final score was 66-55, though the outcome never seemed to be in doubt. Hopkins played a dogged game throughout; however, the first string Hornets had just too much firepower and pace, helping the team jump out to a big early lead and then dictate matters for the remainder of the game. The entire bench got plenty of minutes, and Ethan Doherty, in particular, enjoyed an outstanding night shooting the ball, making 6 three pointers to lead all scorers with18 points. It was a terrific way to open up their Fairchester League season, though the Hornets' next match up is another non-league foe, the Dexter School from Boston, on Friday at the BAC.

    Tre Breland 4 1-4 9, Tim Dawson 5 1-3 13, Christian Adams 1 0-0 2, Jackson Bengini 5 2-2 14, Jahki Pettway 0 0-0 0, Chris Cahill 1 0-0 3, Jeff Nugent 1 0-0 3, Ethan Doherty 6 0-0 18, Tony Zhou 0 0-0 0, Dylan Ratta 0 0-0 0, Sam Jewett 0 0-0 0, Brendan Palmer 1 0-0 2

  • Wrestling Dominates Choate & Hopkins

    Bud Kohler
Varsity Wrestling has begun the 2018-2019 with an explosive display of power against an impressive array of larger school opponents. At a successful weekend quad meet at Pomfret, they bested the hosts 39-36, and defeated Lexington Christian 59-12, while narrowly falling to perennial powerhouse Roxbury Latin School of Boston 45-36.
On Wednesday, the Hornets stayed closer to home and enjoyed an outstanding tri meet at Choate. In the first match, they defeated the hosts 7-0 on the mat. In losing points to forfeits in weight classes where we had no wrestlers, the Hornets were tied with the Wild Boars 36-36, but won in a tie breaking match. They also won all six of their matches on the mat against Hopkins, but again dropped points on forfeits, ultimately losing on paper 42-36. Nevertheless, the team was ecstatic at their undefeated day, and Coach Blair Tugman complimented the team on such a gritty effort against so many larger schools.
Thus far, four wrestlers are undefeated: Aiden Hebert (126 lbs.) 5-0 with 4 first period pins and a decision over a national qualifier, Klyde Auba (182) 5-0 with 4 pins, Roman Minotti (106) with 1 pin, and Wyn Veiga (160) with 1 pin. Junior Connor Massey at 145 lbs. is 4-1 with 3 pins; Pearson Hill at 152 is also 4-1 with 4 pins; Dylan McNamara at 132 is 4-1 with 2 pins, and Gabe Vucelic-Frick at 170 is 2-1 with one pin. Rounding out the squad are the Fuoco trio - senior Ethan, and twin freshmen Jack and Max, plus senior Sage Giacomini, and sophomore Xavier Austin. In the five head-to-head contests the Hornets have scored 35 individual wins on the mat with only 8 losses.
On Saturday, the Hornets travel to Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Springfield, Mass. for another quad meet. They host their first meet on Wednesday December 19th at the BAC, so be sure to catch them in action.

  • Boys Basketball Opens the New Season with Trifecta Win

    Bud Kohler
The winter sports season has begun, and students and fans naturally want to know right away how the Hornet teams will fare. In their opening weekend of three solid road wins, Boys Varsity Basketball has sent out a very clear message to friends and foes alike - the Hornets are a force to be reckoned with!
Last Friday in a non-FAA contest, the Hornets traveled to Washington Depot in the northwest corner of the state and defeated The Gunnery 74-52. Christian Adams led all scorers, tallying 19, and also led the team in rebounds. Tim Dawson added 15, and newcomer Jackson Benigni threw in 13. The Hornets finished with 6 three pointers from five different scorers. Coach Sean Doherty commented, “Our veterans came out ready to start the season and the bench guys who came in did their jobs as well to maintain the lead all game.”
The following day, the team traveled to Rhode Island where St. Andrew’s was hosting the Zero Gravity National Prep Tourney. The Hornets were matched up against the Brooks School from North Andover, Mass. Brooks came into the contest boasting a 48-0 record for the past two years, and has been a New England prep powerhouse. The Hornets ended that streak with a convincing 73-46 win!  Senior guard Tim Dawson led all scorers with 29 points, including 4 three pointers, while dishing out 9 assists. Jackson Benigni had another stellar game, scoring 18, including 6-7 from the line. Tre Breland also helped pace the fast break with 15 points while adding to the Hornets’ suffocating defense. The Hornets stormed out to a 41-24 halftime lead and never looked back. Afterwards, Coach Doherty added, “I thought our guys were focused all game at the task at hand, and Tim played great from start to finish for us. Brooks has been the top dog for a while now and are well coached, so it was nice to see how our guys handled the challenge.”
To complete the trifecta, the team hit the road one more time on Sunday to compete in another showcase showdown at the 1st Annual NEPSAC Class B Classic, hosted by Marianapolis Prep in Putnam. There the team disposed of another strong side in Beaver Country Day School from Brookline, Mass. 85-66. The Hornets definitely did not ‘leave it to Beaver’ to take any control of the game, swarming the boards at both ends to seize a 44-28 lead at the half. Well rounded performances from seniors Tre Breland, Christian Adams, Tim Dawson, as well as juniors Jackson Benigni, Chris Cahill, Jeff Nugent, and Jahkai Pettway enabled the Hornets to seal the win. “Each guy gave us something special throughout a very hard fought game, “ said Coach Doherty. “ I thought our press set the tone today and carried us throughout the game, turning them over in big spots!”
The bus driver will finally get a rest when the Hornets enjoy their first home game on Tuesday, squaring off against crosstown and FAA rival Hopkins at the Beckerman Center. Congrats to all the coaches and team members on an exciting and impressive start to the 2018-2019 season!

  • Girls Lax Advances to Tournament Final!

While yesterday's downpours seemed suitable only for ducks, the Girls Lacrosse team showed how Hornets can still swarm under the conditions, as they defeated the Harvey School 16-11 in a semifinal match up in the inaugural Western New England Prep School Women's Lacrosse Association (WNEPSWLA) Class C Tournament played at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury. The two teams battled each other and the weather to earn a 9-9 deadlock at halftime. However, the Hornets turned on the jets in the second frame to outscore the Hudson Valley Conference champions 7-2. The Hornet defense also held the Cavaliers' attack scoreless for the final 18 minutes and 25 seconds of the second half to nail down the victory. Senior Maisa DellaValle led all scorers with 7 goals, while Justyna Breuler had 4 goals, Karis Curtis had 3, and freshman Claire Shemo added 2. Karis Curtis also dominated the draw circle and collected a game high 13 draw controls.

The Hornets will face Ethel Walker in the championship game on Sunday, May 20th, at 3 PM at the Ethel Walker. More inclement weather is expected, so hopefully the Hornets will continue to rain down goals this afternoon. Go Hornets!

  • Ben James Medals, Golf Finishes 2nd at FAA Tournament

    Bud Kohler
Augusta might be far off on the horizon, but 8th grade sensation, Ben James, has already proven that he can consistently top the leaderboard at the high school level. On Monday, Ben shot a 72 to capture the individual 1st place medal at the Fairchester Golf Tournament, played at the New Canaan Country Club. Already a New Haven Register All Area selection as a 7th grader, Ben has emerged as the most dominant Hornet golfer since local legend Evan Beirne. In fact he maintains an undefeated record against opposing schools for this season, having only finished second on one occasion to fellow teammate Jackson Roman. Golf legend Ben Hogan once said, "Of all the hazards, fear is the worse." If that is true, then Ben should continue to tear up the courses, as he displays great composure and golf maturity at such a young age.

But Ben was not the only story on the day. Overall, the Hornets finished second out of seven teams, runners-up to host St. Luke's. According to Coach Keith Kaliszewski, the team total of 413 is the lowest Hamden Hall 18 hole score in well over 20 years, bettering the mark of 421 that had been reached during Mr. Izzo's tenure as golf coach! Also contributing to the excellent finish, and joining Ben as FAA All League, was freshman Roman Jackson who came in second with a 75, and senior Max Sinoway, who shot an 85 to earn an All League Honorable Mention.
In addition, senior Chris Izzo blew away his previous personal best score with an 88.

The Kingswood Invitational still awaits next Wednesday, to be played at Oak Ridge Country Club in Agawam, MA. This annual tournament is considered the New England championship for the region's prep schools. Good luck to Ben, Coach K, and the entire team, and congratulations for a great run this season. (And Ben, next Wednesday, "Be the ball.")

  • Baseball and Boys Lax Earn Split with Hopkins in FAA Tournaments; Boys Lax to Host Rye in Final

    Bud Kohler
The top prep rivalry in the New Haven area - Hamden Hall vs. Hopkins, the Hornets against the Hilltoppers - renewed the battle this week in the Fairchester baseball and lacrosse tournaments. When the dust had settled, each school came away with a win, allowing students, fans, and alums of both schools to claim bragging rights.

On Monday, the baseball team traveled crosstown to face the Hop for the third time this spring. A strong Hopkins squad had won the first game handily, and then bounced back from a 5 run early deficit in the rematch to sweep the series. However, the Hornets were still optimistic about their chances if they could play their 'A' game for an entire 7 innings. Unfortunately, after 6 1/2 near perfect innings, they fell short. Over six frames the teams were deadlocked and scoreless. In the top of the seventh, Hamden Hall broke the 0-0 tie on an RBI single by junior Billy Gioulos to take a 1-0 lead. Ryan Doherty threw a gem of a game and had shut out the Hop over six, but the team ran out of luck. Where the wind had blown in all game, a sudden shift helped Hopkins to a lead off double in the bottom of the 7th. Doherty walked the next batter and Hopkins pulled off a double steal. After an intentional walk to load the bases and create a force play situation, Jack DiMatteo, who had come on in relief, caught the runner off third base to force a run down. But the Hornets could not make the put out at the plate and the score was tied. A bloop single followed, plating the winning run and sending the Hornets home heartbroken. The team will now wait to hear if they receive a bid to next week’s New England tournament. High fives, nevertheless, to Coach Fontana and the team for such a great effort.

The Hornets Lacrosse team was able to exact revenge on Wednesday afternoon at home, emerging with a solid 16-10 victory. Having won the regular season crown, the Hornets were seeded #1 for the FAA tournament. They expected to face off against King School; however the Hilltoppers recorded an upset to earn the spot in the semifinal. The Hornets had topped the Hop earlier in the season, but just like the baseball game, past performances can get thrown out the window. Indeed, it was the Hilltoppers who dominated much of the first half, as the Hornets’ offense sputtered a bit, while Hopkins built an early lead. The Hornets finished the half well to knot the score at 7-7. The third quarter, however, was a completely different story as the Hornets came alive at both ends of the field. With brilliant combinations, slick passing, and deft shooting, HH outscored the Hop 7-1 in the period to take a 14-8 lead into the final frame. Arguably the turning point in the contest, however, was a superb individual effort by senior defenseman Ryan Delfini, who, while HH was a man down, knocked the ball loose in an open field check, scooped up the loose ball, and then passed off to the attack for a short handed goal! To their credit, Hopkins never caved in to the pressure and the final quarter became an edgy, defensive affair. After minimum damage from a double penalty, the Hornets worked the possession game and wore down the clock, as well as the opposition, to finish with the hard earned victory. Sophomores Alex DiVincentis and Jeff Nugent both scored five goals and Chase “Chilly” Lilly added four, while freshmen Sam Tomak and Griffin Elliott, as well as Matt Stapleton and Zach Giugno, provided plenty of support. Jackson Lalonde once again helped win many key face offs. And the defensive unit of Delfini, Reese Perrone, Jared Morrissey, and especially the 8th grade ball of fury with the flaming red locks, Konye Taylor, along with Sam Jewett between the pipes, improved over the second half to effectively limit the Hilltoppers’ chances for any comeback. The Hornets will host #2 seed Rye (N.Y.) in the Final on Friday at 4:00. Congrats to the team and coaches, and thanks to the many fans who cheered the Hornets to victory through the dreary weather.

Last week was a very successful one for Girl Varsity Tennis. On Monday at home, the Hornets defeated MacDuffie School 7-0, marking the first shut out of another team in many years. Of special note, 7th grader Evelyn Morrow won at #4 singles while losing only 2 games. Sophomore Lara Sprinz also earned her first win, along with teammate Abbey Catalano, who continues her winning ways, at #3 doubles (W 8-4).

On Wednesday, the squad traveled to Westover School, a team that has usually had the Hornets' number for quite awhile. Lexi McKay won 8-0 at #1 singles, and Hannah Flamm won 8-3, at #3 singles, as both improved their team-best season records to 9 wins and just 3 losses. Kat Baering pulled out a tough, close match to etch her first win at #4 singles (8-5). At # 2 doubles, Abbey Catalano and 8th grader Sandra Apfelroth enjoyed a great win (8-6), clinching the close 4-3 victory for HH! Christina LoRicco, at # 2 singles, gave her best effort, but came up short against a girl who could be described as a human backboard (L 5-8).  Senior Alexa Smoko and junior Shaw Mettler put up a great fight, but fell short in a close match at #1 doubles (5-8), as did Olivia Calderella and Anisha Moran (3-8). Congratulations to Coach Peter Flamm and the entire team on a grand slam week!

  • Baseball Takes 2 of 3; At the Hop in FAA 1st Round

The Varsity Baseball team enjoyed a successful week, sandwiching wins over Greens Farms and St. Luke’s with a setback against league leader King in between. On Monday, the Hornets spotted the visiting Dragons a run in the top of the 1st inning before responding with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. The game remained tight till HH tallied three more in the bottom of the 6th with numerous extra base hits. Juniors Billy Gioulos and Joe Liucci both did damage by legging out a triple and knocking in a run each. Fellow junior, CJ Kuselias ripped a double and a triple, while senior catcher, Shaun Hillis, added 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Senior hurler, Jack DiMatteo limited GFA to a single hit and improved his record to 2-2 on the season.

Unfortunately, the Hornets had to turn right around on Tuesday and travel to Stamford to face off against first place King School. Though the Hornets battled stubbornly, the host Vikings came out on top 5-2. Ryan Doherty still impressed, striking out 9 in the losing effort, while senior Mike Wajdowicz hammered a double and knocked in the two Hornet runs.

On Thursday, the Hornets returned the favor with a 5-2 win of their own over visiting St. Luke’s. Freshman gunslinger, Dan Carbone, pitched a complete game 3 hitter, while striking out 8! Billy Gioulos had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Additional RBI hits by CJ Kuselias, Safi Wazaz, and Mike Wajdowicz rounded out the scoring. With the victory, the Hornets qualified for the FAA tournament and will travel crosstown to play Hopkins on Monday at 4:30. The last time the two teams met, the Hornets jumped out to an impressive 5-0 lead in the 1st inning before eventually succumbing to the Hilltoppers, so Coach Fontana’s squad will hope to start strong and also finish strong this time around.

  • Girls Lax Update

    Bud Kohler
On Friday afternoon Girls Varsity Lacrosse faced off against Greens Farms Academy and lost 18-12 but never gave up, and played great in a hard fought game. Maisa DellaValle led the Hornets with 5 goals, with Karis Curtis scoring 4, Claire Shemo 2, and Justyna Breuler 1. DellaValle and Maddy Malin added an assist each. Goalkeeper Kayleigh Giles turned away 6 shots from the visiting Dragons.

As it was their last home game of the season, the team paid tribute to their 12 graduating seniors for their contributions to the program. Though none are going on to play lax at the next level, their college destinations still represent great achievements by an impressive group of scholar-athletes: Justyna Breuler (University of Michigan), Amanda Carroll (Fairfield University), Marissa Consiglio (Fairfield University), Cassie Delfini (Quinnipiac University), Maisa DellaValle (Wake Forest University), Kayleigh Giles (Villanova University), Miranda Iannone (Cornell University), Alex Johnson (Villanova University), Abby Malin (University of California Berkeley), Hunyee McCollum (UConn), Claire Pancoast (Muhlenberg College), and Natalie Pinela (Yale University).

The Hornets finished the regular season with a record of 4-7 (3-4 in Fairchester play), with two of the losses coming to Hopkins and Rye in sudden death overtime. They have been seeded 6th for the FAA tournament and they will play away at Holy Child (Rye, NY) at 3:00 on Monday. The team will find out at the end of the week if they earn a bid to the inaugural WNEPSWLA girls lacrosse tournament to be held next weekend at Ethel Walker School.

  • Boys Lax Captures Fairchester Regular Season Title!

    Bud Kohler
Boys Varsity Lacrosse put together one of its best team efforts of the season at just the right time to defeat Rye Country Day 11-7, winning the Fairchester regular season championship. Coming off a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory against King School on Saturday, the Hornets knew they needed their 'A' game against the visiting Wildcats, who were considered a slight favorite. The match-up of the league's two unbeaten teams certainly lived up to expectations, with Rye and HH trading early goals that showcased their offensive talent, while both defenses forced turnovers to leave the game deadlocked till Rye took a 3-2 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Hornets began to assert themselves in the second quarter as junior "FoGo" specialist, Jackson Lalonde, consistently won the faceoffs to jump start the Hornet attack. In fact, Jackson won his 600th career faceoff in the game. It was then on the "Super Sophs" to find the back of the net, and they certainly delivered the goods. Alex DiVincentis led the way with 5 goals, followed by Chase Lilly with 3, Zach Giugno with 2 goals plus an assist, and Jeff Nugent with a goal and 2 assists. Freshman Griffin Elliot added an assist.  The teams continued to trade goals into the second half before the Hornets began to pull away. While the attack gave the Hornets the scoring edge, the defense, anchored by another sophomore, goalie Sam Jewett along with the longsticks of Ryan Delfini, Reese Perrone, Jared Morrisey, and Konye Taylor, shut down a previously potent Wildcat offense. Jewett was a force in the net, finishing with 11 saves on the day.

The victory earned the Hornets the #1 seed in the upcoming FAA tournament, and should help them secure a New England bid as well. With the top seed, the Hornets will have a bye before facing off against a team to be determined. Congratulations to Coach Warnock, his coaching staff, and the entire team on a terrific win.

    Bud Kohler
After several setbacks the Varsity baseball team rebounded with a win over Cheshire Academy on Saturday and then topped The Master's School of West Simsbury on Monday at home 6-1. Freshman Danny Carbone pitched well and got his first win, helping the team get a big victory versus an established pitcher in this non-league match up. Carbone also had a hit and a run scored. Mike Gulia scored 2 runs for the Hornets, who notched a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. They extended the lead to 4-0 before the visiting Lions scored their single run. The Hornets added 2 for good measure in the 6th to seal the victory, which ups their record to 5-4. Tuesday the team travels down to Rye, NY for an FAA game.

  • Boys Lax and Baseball Fall Short

    Bud Kohler
Boys Lacrosse and Baseball teams stumbled over the last few days, with both dropping games to FAA foe Brunswick. On Friday, Baseball traveled down to Greenwich and faced off against the host Bruins, whose program has improved dramatically over the recent seasons. The Hornets ended up being mercied after 5 innings 15-0. The following day, Boys Lax made the same trek down to Greenwich, and though they battled well, also came away with a loss, 11-10. The team started out slow, going down three early, in large part from being stuck in weekend traffic and having to rush through warm-ups.  However, they closed the gap to 3-2 on a couple of great transition goals from Jeff Nugent and some great saves in the goal from Sam Jewett. Jackson Lalonde continued to be dominant at the faceoff, winning 12 draws throughout the game to keep the Hornets within striking distance. The team finally tied the score up at 6-6 early in the third quarter. The host Bruins surged ahead in the fourth quarter and led 11-8 late in the game. Sophomore Alex DiVicentis closed it to one after two excellent offensive possessions, but the Hornets ran out of time before they could tie the game. Despite the setback, the team hopes to rebound quickly, when they host a formidable Gunnery team on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Baseball also was looking for a chance to rebound when they hosted King School from Stamford. Unfortunately, the Vikings were able to muster 4 runs on 5 hits by the fourth inning and then hold the Hornets to 2 runs late in the game to take the 4-2 win. Ryan Doherty took the hill first for HH and suffered the loss to fall to 1-2; freshman Danny Carbone came on in the 6th and finished well. Senior Safi Wazaz had 3 hits, including a triple, and 1 RBI, while fellow seniors Shaun Hillis had the other RBI, and Mike Wajdowicz hit a double. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-4 on the season.  They will play away and then home against Cheshire Academy this Thursday and Friday.

  • "Sunny" Spring Update

    Bud Kohler
The weather might not be ideal, but the spring season is well underway and several Hornet teams are basking in whatever sun appears. Girls Lacrosse boasts an undefeated 3-0 record. They opened up with a spectacular 15-7 win over visiting King School of Stamford this past Saturday. In an all-around team effort, seven different Hornets got on the scoreboard. Senior captain Maisa DellaValle and freshman Claire Shemo led the way with 4 goals apiece. Sophomore Molly Anderson and junior captain Karis Curtis each had 2 tallies, while seniors Justyna Breuler, Cassie Delfini, and Miranda Iannone each chipped in a goal. The strong defensive effort on Saturday was led by senior goalie, Kayleigh Giles, who was stellar in stopping seven Viking shots. Seniors Abby Malin, Nat Pinela and Claire Pancoast, and junior Maddy Malin were all part of a suffocating defensive unit. On Monday, the Hornets staged a thrilling come-from-behind victory, edging FAA rival Holy Child 15-14.  Freshman star Claire Shemo again tallied four for the Hornets, as did Karis Curtis and Molly Anderson. Justyna Breuler added two and Maisa DellaValle chipped in one. Kayleigh Giles made 10 saves, and the defense held Holy Child scoreless for the final 14 minutes for the dramatic comeback win. The girls continued their roll with a convincing win over Storm King School 16-4. Curtis again recorded four goals, Shemo scored three, while Alex Johnson, Iannone, and Breuler got on the stat sheet with two goals apiece. Della Valle scored one, as did Abby Malin and Cassie Delfini. The Hornets outshot the Cougars 27-10.
Boys Lacrosse also has earned three wins, including victories over Wooster School and crosstown rival Hopkins. The relatively young team stumbled on the road at Canterbury, but rebounded with a 10-5 victory over FAA foe St. Luke’s on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets’ offense has plenty of potential but has sputtered at times. After a tight first half, the Hornets began to gel and dominate the Storm. Alex DiVincentis scored a hat trick and Kai Bruneau, Matt Stapleton and Griffin Elliott each added two goals to pace the Hornet attack. Bruneau’s brace, coming round from the goalie’s blind side, were both the result of the kind of excellent ball movement that Coach Kevin Warnock has been calling for. The defense, led by standout Sam Jewett between the pipes, and longsticks Ryan Delfini, Reese Perrone, and eighth grader, Konye Taylor, also looked very sharp in the second frame. Jackson Lalond has returned from injury to win faceoffs, while Chase Lilly and Jeff Nugent help direct the offense as the Hornets seek to hit their stride.
Three seems to be the magic number, as Varsity Baseball has a trio of wins offset by two losses. Having opened up with the 3-1 win against Choate, the Hornets bested GFA 11-0 and then St. Luke’s 4-1 on the road. Kal Gonzales gave up only one run in the fourth inning, and Joe Liucci came on in relief to calm the Storm. Brendan Casey hit a double; Mike Gulia, Shaun Hillis, Billy Gioulos, and Liucci each had an RBI, while CJ Kuselias had 2 hits in the FAA league win. Unfortunately, the Hornets were derailed by Rye 3-1 on Saturday and Hopkins 9-0 on Wednesday, but hope to rebound on Friday down at Brunswick.
The Varsity Golf team has looked impressive indeed on the links thus far. In a tight match on Wednesday at Lyman Meadows CC, the Hornets topped Choate and Pomfret 213-217-224. Eighth grader Ben James, a New Haven Register All Area selection last year as a seventh grader, was the medalist in the nine hole match, recording a score of 37. The rest of the team was clutch, with Jackson Roman shooting 39, Max Sinoway 42, Ethan Springhorn 46, and Nolan Richards 49. Then on Thursday, in a dual meet, the Hornets comfortably topped King School 209-237 at the New Haven Country Club. Ben James was again atop the leaderboard with a 35, followed by Max Sinoway with a 40, Jackson Roman 41, Mitchell Swick 46,and Nolan Richards 47. At this rate, Coach Keith Kaliszewski could care less if the sun does not come out on Match Day.
Girls Tennis Won 4-3 over Sacred Heart of Greenwich at home. The three top singles - Lexy McKay, Hannah Flamm, and Christina LoRicco - each won. However, all three doubles lost. So it came down to a very long match at # 4 singles. With everyone from both sides watching and cheering, Junior Shaw Mettler lost her first set, pulled out the second set, then came back in a thrilling 10 point tie breaker, 10-4, to win the match for HH.
There’s a rumor that warm weather lies ahead. Regardless, the Hornets are already buzzing!

Varsity Baseball opened up its Fairchester League play with a convincing 11-0 win over Greens Farms Academy. The Hornet bats came alive right from the start, grabbing a 2 run lead in the opening frame. Though they only added a single run in the third, the Hornets pounded away for four runs in the sixth and again in the seventh to ease to the win. Safi Wazaz led the hitting parade with a home run and two RBIs. CJ Kuselias hit a double and a triple for two RBIs. Mike Gulia and Billy Gioulos also had two hits apiece. Shaun Hillis had a double and Kalen Gonzales added two RBIs. Meanwhile there was no home cooking for the host Dragons as they were limited to a single hit, while also committing four errors. Ryan Doherty struck out 9 in a dominating performance, and freshman Danny Carbone relieved in the 5th inning and continued to shut GFA down. The Hornets are now 2-0 on the season and play next on Saturday at home vs. Rye.

  • Winter Athletes Recognized

With the end of March Madness the winter season comes to a conclusion and the Hornet teams each earned a significant degree of success. Under first year coach, Sean Doherty, the Boys Varsity Basketball team won both the Fairchester League regular season and tournament titles before bowing out in the New England quarterfinals. Both the Boys and Girls Swim teams captured CISAC championship trophies and swam well in the States. Wrestling was outstanding at the Derby Invitational and did well in league meets. Girls hoops, despite being riddled by injury, played with remarkable grit and made it all the way to the Fairchester championship game. All in all, another outstanding season for Hornet sports. The team achievements were, in part, the result of numerous outstanding individual efforts. • Is it Spring Yet?

    Bud Kohler
The spring teams are currently battling some near frosty conditions as they begin their season. Several teams took advantage of the warm weather down south to get in some training and scrimmages. Baseball, as well as Girls and Boys Lacrosse, practiced at Disney's ESPN sports complex during the second week of the "Spring" Break. Baseball played two teams from Arkansas and one from Pennsylvania. Coach Joe Fontana said, "It was a good athletic and cultural experience for all. We played everyone and tried to see where the pieces fit best for our team." Boys Lax faced off against two powerhouses in Blair Academy and Brooks School, but Coach Kevin Warnock was very pleased with the constantly improving level of play as the team began to gel. Meanwhile, Coach Kaliszewski and the Golf team flew down to North Carolina, only to find snow down there as well.

Upon returning this week, Boys Lax scrimmaged at Cheshire HS, while Baseball scrimmaged North Branford HS, and then opened up Wednesday with a solid 3-1 non-league win over Choate. The Hornets got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the second and then added an insurance run in the 6th. Mike Gulia had 2 hits, while Billy Gioulos and Mike Coggins each had an RBI. Safi Wazaz and Joe Liucci each scored a run, Jack DiMatteo was virtually untouchable and recorded the win, and Ryan Doherty finished up, allowing the Wild Boars only one run in the last frame. Shaun Hillis provided a solid job as battery mate to both behind the plate.

  • Boys Capture FAA Tournament Crown; Girls Fall to St. Lukes

    Bud Kohler
Itś never easy to beat an opponent three times in a season, and the FAA Tournament final certainly proved that point as the #1 seed Hornets had to deliver a full team effort to defeat the #2 seed Storm of St. Lukeś 68-62 on Saturday at the Beckerman Center.

Despite having already beaten St. Luke’s twice during the regular season by double digits, the boys knew it was still going to be quite a challenge to dethrone the two time defending FAA champs. HH edged out to what looked like a comfortable 11 point lead at the half, only to see the Storm mount a determined comeback and close to within one point midway through the second frame. Both teams made big plays as the game rocked back and forth and St. Lukeś closed to 65-62 with a minute and a half to go. But the Hornets dug down and made big defensive stops, care of Tre Breland and Luke Schoonmaker. Tim Dawson and Breland then cemented the win with clutch free throw shooting. Kudos to senior Andrew Rice, who was the Hornets' offensive leader, throwing down 22 points and posing a threat that the Storm just could not stop. After the game, Rice deflected the credit from himself when told the Register, ¨We played with energy. We were aggressive. We played good defense, and defense wins games.” Coach Sean Doherty added, Ï am very proud of our guys tonight to finish out a hard fought game with a well coached St.Lukes squad. So many big performances. I don’t even want to single just one guy out; great TEAM win .“ The victory gives the Hornets the Double: winning both the regular season as well as tournament trophies. The team now turns its attention to the upcoming New England tournament. With an impressive 20-4 record, the team has been placed in the Class B bracket and seeded 6th. They will play at #3 seed Canterbury School in New Milford on Wednesday at 5:00.

The girls team was not so fortunate Saturday, falling to the #1 seed and regular season champions St. Lukeś by a score of 68-40. The Hornets played their typical feisty game; however, they could not overcome the impressive talent on the floor for the host Storm. When Asha Parker, who is the Hornets'chief force down low, picked up two quick fouls and had to sit out so much of the first half, Lukeś was able to extend their lead to 38-18 at halftime. Coach Borelliś team continued to scratch their way back in the second half, and the team left the floor at the end of the game defeated but proud of their extraordinary effort against a truly formidable opponent. Kai Clemons played fiercely in her last varsity game, scoring 8 points, including a three pointer. Seventh grader, Jayda Johnson led all Hornets with 17 points, including 2 threes - a sign of still more great things to come in the future. At the same time, the team says good-bye to not only Clemons, but also fellow seniors Alex Johnson, Mimi Ramos, and Cassi Smith.

Congratulations to both teams and their coaches on outstanding seasons. Hopefully the boys will enjoy three more games. Go Hornets!

  • Swarm vs. Storm; Girls & Boys Basketball vs. St. Lukes in Fairchester Finals

    Bud Kohler
Saturday will see two battles of the Swarm against the Storm, as both boys and girls varsity basketball have reached the Fairchester tournament championship final games where they face off against St. Lukeś of New Canaan.
The girls team, despite key injuries, is still peaking at the right time. On Tuesday, they defeated crosstown rival Hopkins 47-31 in a quarterfinal matchup where they asserted their typical smothering defense and balanced offense to topple the Hilltoppers. All nine active players contributed defensively, holding the Hopkins girls to a handful of baskets in the first half. Asha Parker, Kai Clemons, Mimi Ramos, and Jayda Johnson hit timely hoops and made their free throws to see out the win in the second half.
On Thursday, the Hornets faced a much stiffer test, but emerged with a hard fought 49-46 victory over Sacred Heart Greenwich. After trailing 29-15 in the second frame, the visiting Tigers came roaring back with a 19-3 run to grab a 34-32 lead. Coach Borelli called a well placed timeout to settle the team and refocus them on the keys to winning the game, i.e. sound defense, boxing out, breaking the press and using the clock in a positive manner. The girls responded, outscoring Sacred Heart 17-12 over the final 7 minutes to secure the victory and a trip to the championship game. Seventh grade star, Jayda Johnson, was instrumental in the win with her composure and ball handling at point guard. Asha Parker was a force on the boards at both ends, and Kai Clemons was at the heart of the Hornet swarm, tenacious on defense and slashing through the lane on offense. The girls will certainly have their work cut out for them as they attempt to quell the #1 seed Storm of St. Lukeś on Saturday at 12:00 in New Canaan.
The boys' route to the final has been a bit easier. The Hornets, at 13-1 in the league and seeded #1, received a first round bye. On Thursday, they blitzed Brunswick of Greenwich 82-51 behind double digit scoring from Andrew Rice (19), Christian Adams (13), Tim Dawson (11), and Tre Breland (10). The Hornets' up tempo game was just too much for the visiting Bruins as they established a comfortable 43-23 lead by halftime. Eleven players got ionto the scoring book in total. The Hornets scored 12 three pointers in total, including one each by Chris Wright, Corey Walters, and Jahkai Pettway, while Ethan Doherty threw down a pair. The Hornets (19-4) now host No. 2 seed St. Luke’s in the final on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Hornets have beaten the Storm twice this season by more then ten, but they will need to be at their best to defeat the defending FAA champs.
Good luck to both HH teams. Go Hornets!

  • Boys Hoops Wins FAA Title

    Bud Kohler
The Boys Varsity Basketball team continued to steamroll the opposition en route to earning the regular season Fairchester Athletic Association title, their first under the guidance of first year coach Sean Doherty. Having come over from the Quinnipiac University program to succeed legendary coach, David Beckerman, Coach Doherty has instilled his own brand of up tempo game that has spelled success for the Hornets this season.
On Friday, the team celebrated Senior Day with a solid win over King School 70-58. Seniors Andrew Rice, Chris Wright, Michael Johnson, and Luke and Jack Schoonmaker started together for the first time this season. They got things going in the right direction from the opening tipoff; and as the bench guys came in, they kept the pressure going as well. To start the second half the Hornets picked up the full court pressure with Tim Dawson and Byron Breland joining Rice who threw down 20 to lead all scorers. as the Hornets built a comfortable lead for most of the second frame. Coach Doherty commented, “I thought Tim, Tre, Christian (Adams), and Andrew played a huge second half, and each made great plays at both ends of the court. But today was about our seniors and I was so happy and proud that these guys helped us clinch the regular season championship and get a 1st round bye in the upcoming tournament.”
Saturday, the Hornets posted a 72-51 well rounded victory over Rye Country Day. The Hornets used a well balanced attack led by juniors Christian Adams (17 points) and Byron Breland (14) to take an early lead. They sustained the lead throughout the game, with many different players making great contributions off the bench as well. Senior big man, Jack Schoonmaker, tossed in 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while sophomore shooting guard, Chris Cahill, enjoyed some hot shooting in making three deep threes for his 9 points. At the end of the contest, Coach Doherty offered, “This was our last regular season game, and I was impressed how our bench guys came in and kept the lead throughout the game. Corey Walters, Cahill, Jahkai Pettway, AJ Harmon, Ethan Doherty, and Jack (Schoonmaker) all push our starters everyday in practice, and I was happy to see them competing against Rye for more than half the game. Each one of them gave us some nice plays - whether a three, a rebound, or a nice extra pass."
The Hornets finished the regular season 18-4 and 13-1 in the Fairchester League, winning the regular season championship outright and receiving the #1 seed for this week's tournament. The Hornets will host the winner of the King vs. Brunswick game this Thursday at 6:00. Congratulations to the team and coaching staff on an outstanding run this season, and good luck in the tournament!

  • Boys Basketball Survive Dragon Scare

    Bud Kohler
Boys Varsity Basketball team hit the road to do battle with FAA league rival Greens Farms Academy, and earned a gutty win 63-60.  After a slow start offensively for the Hornets and a red hot shooting performance by the host Dragons, who consistently made deep threes throughout, the game became a shootout battle of wills. Byron Breland and Tim Dawson really stepped up big for the Hornets in the second half and took the game over. Dawson finished as leading scorer with 18 points and came up with two huge steals in the last minute of the game. With ice in his veins, his clutch free throws then sealed the game for the Hornets and quenched the Dragons' fire. Breland finished with 17 points, also hitting many clutch shots, while senior Andrew Rice posted another tremendous defensive night and was a warrior on the glass at both ends of the court. Christian Adams ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds. After the game, Coach Sean Doherty commented, “ I was very proud of our guys tonight in the second half, staying focused and making some big plays when needed. Tim Dawson was huge for us and college coaches need to start taking notice because he is playing great.“ The team in now 11-1 in the Fairchester League and 16-4 overall. They return to action on Friday evening at home against King School from Stamford at 4:00.

  • Girls Basketball Earns Weekend Split

    Bud Kohler
Girls Varsity Basketball continues to persevere, despite a myriad of injuries and illnesses. Over the weekend, the Hoopsters first traveled to Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Springfield, Mass. where they came up short 58-48. Down 20 points at one point, the girls closed the gap to 6 points with a minute left, but could not catch the host Titans. The coaches still felt that it was the most complete game of the season. On Saturday, the girls returned for a plate of home cooking, defeating Rye Country Day 48-34 at the Beckerman Center. Led by Kai Clemons, the defense was the story in a low scoring affair. Freshman Asha Parker has returned from a concussion to lead the team in rebounds at both ends of the court. Seventh grade phenom, Jayda Johnson, plays the point with a composure far beyond her years. Both players have maintained a double digit scoring average the entire season. Currently the team has a record of 9-10 overall with a 4-4 record in the Fairchester League. The girls would arguably be more successful with a healthy roster; nevertheless they have risen to the occasion, supporting each other through the setbacks. Coach Borelli has done an outstanding job molding the young ladies into a close knit unit that works tirelessly to be their best. The team next plays on Tuesday at home versus Greens Farms Academy.

The Few. The Proud. The HH Varsity Wrestling Team. Despite their lack of numbers, Coach Tugman and the team should be proud indeed of their efforts and performance at the Western New England Tournament, commonly known in the preps as the State Meet. On Saturday at the Taft School, the Hornets stung the competition, with four out of five wrestlers medaling. Senior Reese Perrone took home the bronze in the 182 lb. category. Juniors Dylan McNamara finished 4th at 132 lbs.; Wyn Veiga at 145 lbs. took 5th, and Gabe Vuselic-Frick was 6th at 170 lbs. Junior Ethan Fuoco did not medal, but battled well on the mat all day. It was an awesome display, as HH was the only team to medal 80% of its wrestlers! With this strong showing, the boys qualify for the New England Tournament, which will be held this Friday and Saturday at Tabor Academy in Massachusetts. Go Hornets!

  • Boys Hoops Beats Brunwswick and the Flu

When things do not go a team's way, coaches are often prone to give various reasons to explain shortcomings, (though we might never hear from Bill Belichick why he did not play Malcolm Butler in SB LII.) Had the Hornets stumbled recently, we might have heard how a number of key players were sidelined by illness. However, Coach Doherty's squad sucked it up and turned in a gritty performance on the road in defeating Brunswick School 63-46 on Friday evening. The team delivered a well balanced attack, overcoming the adversity of having 3 players out with sickness. Leading scorer, Byron Breland, was also ill, but proved to be the bug that the host Bruins just could not shake. The team picked up huge performances from juniors Christian Adams and Tim Dawson, and senior Andrew Rice. The Hornets are now 10-1 in the Fairchester League and 15-4 overall. They remain in first place in the FAA, having also swept rival St. Luke's last weekend. Coach Doherty remarked, “I liked how guys stepped up to get us a nice road win when we were a little short handed." The Hornets will hope to have a full and healthy roster next week when they face off against three FAA foes. They face off against a tough Greens Farms team on the road Tuesday before some home cooking on Friday and Saturday against King and Rye respectively.

Girls & Boys Hoops Sweep the Hop

    Bud Kohler
When it comes to playing the local rivals, you can often throw out all the stats and records as the adrenaline gets pumping and the fans from the rival schools urge their team on. So often emotions take over and elevate one player's game while rattling another. Meanwhile the coach is trying to keep the team loose and composed, likely repeating a Bill Belichick-like mantra of just "Do Your Job!" On Monday evening at the Beckerman Center, though there was plenty of emotion, both Hornet squads did their jobs with ruthless efficiency, sweeping the doubleheader against crosstown rival Hopkins.

In the opening contest, Coach Megan Borelli's girls team displayed their trademark high press and up tempo game from the first whistle to the last, defeating the Hilltoppers 50-39. Despite a parade of injuries, the team took the game to Hopkins, regardless of who was on the floor. The Hornets were anchored by seventh grade standout, Jayda Johnson, who led the team with 16 points, including three from beyond the three point arc. Freshman Asha Parker dominated the glass at both ends, while chipping in 10 points. Senior Kai Clemons scored 12, while providing leadership and the combativeness to contest every possession. The Hornets rushed out to a 17-5 advantage and then extended their lead to 27-12 before the first half expired.
Hopkins still climbed back in the game and closed the gap to 28-19 early in the second frame. The teams each went on brief scoring runs, and Hopkins was able to to get within seven about midway through the half, but that would be as close as they could get as Clemons and Johnson were clutch down the stretch.

Click here to read the New Haven Register story, along with a picture gallery of the game:

In the nightcap, the Boys team flexed its muscle and cruised to an 83-43 victory. Junior Christian Adams led the team in scoring with 19 points including 3 three pointers. Tre Breland chipped in 14 and Andrew Rice added 11 points as part of a well balanced attack. The Hornets scored 8 three pointers in total, with Chris Cahill and Tim Dawson netting 2 each. Coach Sean Doherty's team also executed a no-nonsense defense to deny the Hilltoppers many second chances, and eased to a 50-11 halftime lead. The second half was a wide open affair and the home crowd cheered their approval as others on the team chipped in. Dawson and senior Jack Schoonmaker each finished with 8 points; Corey Walters had 7; Cahill 6; Michael Johnson 4; Chris Wright and Luke Schoonmaker 3 each. The Hornets remain undefeated in the Fairchester League and enjoy an overall record of 13-3.

Both teams are in action again this week, with the Girls away on Wednesday and the Boys away on Thursday. There is another home doubleheader this Saturday when the Girls host masters School at 12:00 followed by the Boys vs. St. Luke's at 2:00.

Before exams, the Girls Basketball team suffered two close defeats as the clock ticked down. On Wednesday, in a wonderful reversal of fortune, the Hornets enjoyed a sweet away victory, defeating Greenwich Academy 40-39, when seventh grade standout, Jada Johnson went to the foul line and converted a free throw with 1/10th of a second left on the clock. The clutch shooting capped off a dogged performance, in which the Hornets trailed throughout the game, battling foul trouble. The Hornets, also limited by a number of injuries, got great contributions from the bench to mount a consistent defensive effort, as Coach Borelli employed a myriad of defensive sets to frustrate the host Gators. The Hornets got 12 points from junior Jenna Berens and a monster rebounding game from Asha Parker. The Hornets hit the road again Friday to play at Holy Child in New York, before hosting Hopkins next Monday.

  • Girls Hoops Fall Twice at the Buzzer; Cruise Past King

    Bernard Kohler
With three of their best players out with concussions and a bad ankle sprain, the Hornets twice tasted defeat at the end of the game this weekend. On Friday, the Hornets hosted Convent of the Sacred Heart from Greenwich. As the tense and exciting contest wound down, the Hornets saw a last second buzzer beater go in for the Tigers to come up short 46-44 in a FAA league game. On Saturday, the girls traveled to West Hartford only to fall to Watkinson 54-51 in the last minute. Despite the setbacks, the team is playing hard and giving a great effort, which paid off on Tuesday when they defeated the Vikings of King School from Stamford 59-23.
Jenna Berens and Asha Parker continue to lead the scoring, averagin 11 points per game, while also providing strong post play. Kai Clemons averages nearly 11 per game herself, while she remains a tireless defender. Shannon Rhone is the gritty floor general, and seventh grade sensation, Jada Johnson, continues to impress, averaging 9 points per game. Hopefully the team will get back to full strength in time for next weekend's home contests vs. St. Andrews and Cheshire Academy.

  • Young Swim Team Flexes Muscle

    Bud Kohler
The HH Varsity Swim team has traditionally been led by a core of experienced juniors and seniors, who have scored well and provided a solid backbone to the program while the underclassmen contribute and mature. This year, though there are a number of strong upperclass swimmers, the team has come to rely quite heavily on the younger classes and they have certainly delivered as evidenced by two convincing wins this week.
On Wednesday the team traveled to New Milford to face off against host Canterbury and Westover School. Canterbury has won New Englands four out of the last five years, edging our girls team for the NEPSAC title on several occasions. However, in an impressive show of young muscle, the boys bested the Saints 97-86. The girls battled well, but without enough depth in the squad they came up short 97 - 144 to Westover, and 100 - 135 vs. Canterbury. Swimmers who scored points for HH included one senior, seven juniors, three sophomores, ten freshmen, two eighth graders and two seventh graders. Freshman Sam Lovejoy was a beast, capturing the gold in four events, while fellow frosh, Duncan Farquharson nearly matched him with three firsts and one second. Senior Natalie Pinela continued to demonstrate why she is one of the best off the diving board in taking first. Eighth grader Sinead Masterson took home 1 gold and two silvers while junior Liv Caldarella took a first, second, and fourth.

    Hockey Team Wins Holiday Tournament!

    Bud Kohler
Over the break, the Hamden Hall hockey team defeated Lyman Hall 4-0 to capture its second straight Milford Indians Holiday Tournament championship at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Senior forward Matt Stapleton led all scorers with two goals, while junior forward Charles Manger and 8th grade defenseman Grant Curtis each had one goal and one assist to lead the Hornets to the victory. Eighth grade goaltender Katie DeSa was outstanding between the pipes, posting the shutout with 28 saves.
The Hornets began the tournament with a resounding 7-1 victory over Trumbull, highlighted by goals from sophomores Mitchell Swick and Mateo Coppola, and senior defenseman Joseph Neubauer. The second game of the tournament featured another standout 8th grade goalie, Jacob Tinson, who made 21 saves to lead the Hornets to a 2-0 shutout over McMahon of Norwalk. In the semifinals, 7th grader Max Tomak scored a hat trick to lead the Hornets over Wethersfield in a 9-5 goalfest to secure the team’s spot in the championship game.  After hoisting the championship trophy Coach Steve Harris said, “The tournament victory was a total team effort. I am proud of the way the team came together and supported each other.” Coach Harris continues to mold the diverse squad into competitors. • Girls Hoops Running the Court and Banging the Boards (as usual)

    Bud Kohler
Ever since she became the Girls Varsity Basketball coach, Megan Borelli has crafted her squads in a distinct image. Whether she has been blessed with dominating height, such as Rachel Menze and Naomi VanNes, or deft ball handlers like Bianca Tomassini and Krystina Reynolds, or a pure three point sharpshooter like Rachel Plotke, Coach Borelli's teams are characterized by an up tempo offense and relentless defense that so often wear away even the most resilient competition. This year looks no different, as the Hornets have posted a very respectable 4-2 record at the holiday break. Recently, after defeating Canterbury and host Ethel Walker, the team advanced to the final game of the Ethel Walker Tournament where they lost to FAA league St. Luke's in the championship.

The team is averaging 58 points per game while defensively only giving up a stingy 46 points per contest. The team enjoys a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging double figures and a fifth player at 9 per game. The squad also gets contributions from its diverse roster. Freshman Asha Parker leads the team in scoring with 66 points to date, while averaging 11 per game. Middle Schooler Jada Johnson has been sensational, averaging almost 11 per game while seeing time as point guard and shooting guard. Senior Kai Clemons is the emotional leader and a ferocious competitor at both ends of the court. Fellow senior, Cassi Smith, has hit a number of clutch three pointers and is a vocal leader in practices as well as games. Junior point guard Shannon Rhone truly leads by example both on and off the floor; and junior Jenna Berens is averaging just under 11 points per game and is a force on the offensive and defensive boards.

The season should be quite promising with all players buying in to Coach Borelli's vision. Make a New Year's resolution to come out and catch a game.

  • Baseball Blanks GFA

    Bud Kohler
Rye.

  • Coach Fontana Inducted to Hall of Fame

    Bud Kohler
As Hamden Hall prepares to stage its second athletic Hall of Fame ceremony honoring the achievements of outstanding alums, one of our own has been recognized and will be inducted to his high school Hall of Fame. Saturday evening, Joe Fontana, our long time baseball coach and Assistant Athletic Director, will be inducted into the Westerly High School (RI) Athletic Hall of Fame. Mr. Fontana was an outstanding soccer player, a three year starter, earning All Division honors twice. He scored 40 goals in his career, including 19 in his senior year when he was also named to the All State team. He intended to continue to play in college, having been recruited by the University of Rhode Island; however, a knee injury unfortunately brought his playing career to an end. Mr. Fontana also played baseball and was second-team All Division his junior year, providing him with a love and experience for the sport that has helped him create such an outstanding baseball program here at Hamden Hall. Congratulations Coach Fontana!

  • Wrestlers Deliver a "Stately" Performance

    Bud Kohler
The Few.

    Bud Kohler

  • Wyn Wins at FAA

The six Ironmen of the varsity wrestling team traveled to Rye Country Day School in NY on Saturday to compete in the annual Fairchester League Meet. Junior Wyn Veiga went 4-0 on the day to capture the gold in the 145 lb. class. Fellow junior, Dylan McNamara, went 3-1 in the 135 lb. category to win the silver. Dylan's only loss was at the hands of a wrestler ranked third in New England. Though no one else medaled, Coach Blair Tugman was quite proud of their efforts. The Hornets host a quad meet on Wednesday, facing off against Taft, Trinity-Pawling, and Forman.

  • Nail Biter! Girls Hoops Win at the Buzzer!

    Bud Kohler

  • Swim Team Continues to Make a Splash

The momentum continues for the HH swim team. On Wednesday the Hornets hosted Wilbraham & Monson from the Springfield, Mass. area, and the Williams School from New London.  The Boys team won, scoring 144 points, with Wilbraham & Monson taking second with 91, and Williams third at 82. The meet started close, and the Titans had a number of strong swimmers; however the Hornets had the depth in the roster to pull away and cruise to the win. The victory raised the team record to 4-1. The girls team swam hard and finsihed second behind W&M 132-94-82.
