Varsity Wrestling Season Closes at New England Tournament
The varsity wrestling team finished their season off with an invitation to the New England Tournament. With strict requirments based on season wins and placement at States, simply being invited to compete is a tremendous honor. Senior captain Tyler Bisson, sophomore Alex Chiodo and Freshman Jack Templeton represented Hamden Hall in one of their largest showings yet. Unfortunately, due to illness senior Brad Orr was unable to attend. In front of several hundred people Hamden Hall wrestlers faced off again the best competitors from around New England and, frequently facing more experienced wrestlers, illustrated why Hamden Hall is recognized as one of the scrappiest teams in the league. Although most of the matches did not yield victories, Hamden Hall won the crowd over with their sportsmanship and tremendous heart.
Senior Captain Tyler Bisson dominated his opposition on the way to a close 2nd place finish at States this past Saturday. Seniors Brad Orr and Tomer Stein struggled early in the tournament before coming back to dispatch their opponents and finish with strong 5th place finishes. Captain Matt Crockett and sophomore Jack Dowe both secured 6th place finishes. Hamden Hall finished with an impressive 10th place finish out of 21. The team now has its sights firmly set on New Englands this upcoming weekend.
Varsity Wrestling Takes 2nd at FAA; Bisson All-League
Captains Tyler Bisson and Matt Crockett set the tone early at the FAA All League Tournament with strong individual wins. The varsity wrestling team went on to place 2nd in the league, behind Brunswick, despite strong showings from Alex Chiodo, Tomer Stein, and Jack Templeton.
After a week littered with snow days the Hamden Hall wrestling dug itself out to attend the Brunswick Invitational Tournament (BIT). In the first round of the tournament Dan Grossman†caught his opponents arm and finished the match with a pin, showing all in attendance that as a veteran wrestler his opponents would not be able to make any mistakes if they hoped to win. Dan Grossman went on to win several more matches and earned a 4th place finish. Freshman wrestler†James Calzolaio faced a much stronger Hotchkiss opponent in the first round, but after being muscled to the ground he confidently reversed his opponent to get the lead. He went on to outwork his opponent for a 3-2 victory. James wrestled well in the remainder of his matches before getting knocked out of the tournament shortly before the quarter finals. First year wrestler and Hamden Hall senior Jose Alvarez-de-Lugo faced experienced veteran opponents early on in the tournament and although he lost his matches, he often outworked his opponents making them rely on their much deeper experience to beat him. Captain Matt Crockett wrestled one of the most anticipated show downs with the number 1 seed from Brunswick. After grueling match Matt lost by 1 point when his opponent was able to hold his leg to keep Matt from scoring the additional points that would have won the match.
Captain Tyler Bisson and senior wrestler Dan Grossman displayed their technical prowess at the Derby Invitational, both taking 3rd place in their respective weight classes. Second year wrestler Jack Dowe and freshman Jack Templeton also had impressive showings.
