Hamden Hall-Infused Scarecrow to be Showcased at Beardsley Zoo

A Hamden Hall-infused scarecrow will be on display at Beardsley Zoo at its ninth annual Scarecrows on Parade event Oct. 17 -31.

The fifth-grade class worked for three weeks on the scarecrow, which was designed with a nautical theme in acknowledgment of Hamden Hall's Mystic Seaport Signature Program. Topped off with a Hamden Hall hat, the six-foot-tall structure had its beginnings in Lower School art teacher Susan Bennett's studio before ending up in Dave Bennett's MakerSpace Design Lab.

"Students learned how to secure the life-sized armature, stuff their new friend with newspaper and hay, and paint a nautical-themed pumpkin head complete with waves for eyes and fish eyebrows," explained Mr. Bennett, who, besides his science teaching duties, is also the director of the MakerSpace Design Lab. "Additional props such as fishing nets, bobbers, a fishing pole, and a Hamden Hall banner complete the group project and were donated by the students."

Each student also designed a nautical patch for placement on the scarecrow's pants and shirt - all of which are recycled items according to Mrs. Bennett (not to mention the boots, which once belonged to Mr. Bennett!).

Besides being showcased at Beardsley Zoo, the scarecrow will also be entered into a contest along with 75 other entries. Zoo guests on Oct. 30 will judge and select their favorites in several categories. Each student in the fifth-grade class received complimentary passes to the zoo so that they could be on hand to cast their votes. Click here for more information on the Scarecrows on Parade event.

Being a school project, there was also an academic component, according to Mrs. Bennett.

"In addition to the communal artistic efforts, the students were asked to use their academic knowledge from their Mystic Seaport partnership to help make the scarecrow meaningful and unique. Cross-curricular learning between social studies, art, and academic references tied to creative elements elevated this scarecrow to a very significant level."

This is Hamden Hall’s inaugural year in the scarecrow competition.
