Lower School Dress Code

Hamden Hall asks that all students follow the school’s dress code. Hamden Hall is an institution that requires a degree of formality and decorum from its students in both manner and style. In the matter of clothing, we recognize the need for individual expression; however, the appearance of the student body must be appropriate for this academic institution. As always, this is a subjective opinion which is based on the expectations and experience of the faculty and administration. All dress code matters, or matters of personal appearance, can and will be enforced by any member of the faculty or referred to the Director of Lower School. Our hope is that the dress code allows students freedom of expression without compromising the respectful relationships between teacher and student and prevents clothes from becoming a distraction in the learning environment.

The following dress code applies to all Lower School Students:

● All clothing should be neat and clean without holes, rips, stains, or patches. This includes: *Sweatshirts, shirts, blouses, sweaters, solid-colored or patterned tops, provided graphics and/or writing is respectful and appropriate. *Dress pants, skirts, dresses, khakis, corduroys, shorts, jeans, solid-colored or patterned leggings, and joggers. Shorts and skirts must have modestly tailored hemlines.
● Sneakers are strongly encouraged. Keep in mind students run and play at recess and travel around the campus for different classes, so a safe pair of shoes is important. Footwear appropriate for the active Lower School child does not include beach shoes, crocs, shoes with excessively high heels, or shoes that slip off a child’s foot.
● Clothing with political messages and unacceptable graphics and/or writing is not permitted.
● Hats, visors, and headgear, including hoods, may not be worn inside any campus building.
● Clothing must cover the midriff, back, buttocks, or any undergarments. Exceptions to the dress code can be made for medical, religious, or cultural reasons. Please contact Lorri Carroll, Director of Lower School, with any questions.

NOTE: Grade 6 students should bring appropriate athletic attire to change into for sports on Monday-Thursday. If a dress code rule is repeatedly violated, that student will have consequences accordingly.

Performance dress is expected for formal musical performances (Kindergarten- Grade 6) and other noted special occasions. This includes dress shirt/tie, blouse, dress, skirt, dress slacks (no athletic or cargo pants), dress shoes (no sneakers or shoes without backs). If you have any questions about performance dress, please contact our Lower School Music Director, Rachael Jungkeit at extension 208 or rjungkeit@hamdenhall.org.
