Grade 2 Campers Embark On Adventure Under the Stars

As the fire crackled on the screen and twinkly night lights luminated the room, second-grade students were quiet under their tents enjoying a leisurely fun activity, Camp-Read-A Lot. Soothing tunes also helped set the mood for the special program, which emphasized the fun you can have as accomplished readers.

Conjoining classrooms were transformed into four themed campsites: Camp Evergreen, Camp Blue Water, Camp Super S’mores, and Camp Reading Rangers. Teachers Erin Correa and Emily Anderson welcomed the campers into the encampment and began the morning with a round of silent reading. Once the set time was up, students in groups of three or four made their way to their first designated camping site to partake in a variety of teamwork activities.

The students were quick on the search during the scavenger hunt where they had to match a photo to the listed item description before embarking on the “word sheet” assignment in which they had to create new words from the letters of each campsite name. To wrap the last unit of study of time and money into the mix, students were tasked with a math challenge to count change on a task card while also selecting an item with the same price point. For the time challenge, students examined clock illustrations and wrote down the specific time to showcase their understanding of units of time. The morning ended with snack time and more leisurely reading.

“This special day is to celebrate how far the students have come as readers this year,” said Miss Anderson. “We hope to continue this tradition as it lets students enjoy a break, but also showcases that reading and learning can be fun.”
