Cross-Country Trail Receives Major Makeover

The cross-country trail behind the Beckerman Athletic Center at our Skiff Street Athletic Complex has been redesigned this summer and is now ready to use.
Following numerous storms that left behind severe damage, parts of the trail had become unusable. Immediate renovation of the trail was planned as the trail is used by both the cross-country team and others as a hiking path. With the destruction of the wooded section behind the softball field, the blueprint was to reroute the course for safety purposes and preserve the integrity of the original trail.
David Bennett, former faculty member and cross-country and lacrosse coach, spearheaded the project.
My goal was to utilize the beautiful Beckerman property and get a course that is 5K (3.1 miles) in length, which is the high school standard for distance. Our course is two laps and allows spectators to see the racers in a number of different places throughout the race, a rarity in cross country; not usually a spectator friendly sport.”
Over a two-week period in August, David cut trees surrounding the trail, cleared leftover brush, and repurposed two old “roads” to reroute the trail. Utilizing the southeastern corner of the complex, he created a new path that he said “may be the best course I have built.”
David expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue to be involved in the cross-country program and the Hamden Hall community. Prior to this project, he had redesigned the course a few times since 2006.
