Alumnus Receives Romania's Highest Civil Award

Alumnus Adrian Zuckerman, Class of 1975, who served as the United States Ambassador to Romania, was awarded the “Star of Romania” from Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

The Order of the Star of Romania is the country's highest civil Order. Adrian received the distinguished recognition just prior to his resignation as the U.S. Ambassador to Romania. He had served from Nov. 22, 2019, to Jan. 20, 2021.

“Thank you for this great honor. I am truly humbled and gratified by this award and the honor I have had to be a part of the great renaissance that is occurring within Romania. Romania is an amazing country, a country with a bright future, and unlimited potential,” said Adrian in his acceptance remarks.

Adrian and his family left Romania for the United States in 1965 when he was 9.

“I love the country of my birth and have been blessed to be able to come back to help Romania achieve greatness. From the first day of my appointment as the United States Ambassador, I pledged to do everything I could to advance the bilateral relationship between our two great nations – and this past year we have achieved momentous things,” he said.

Prior to his ambassadorship, Adrian was a New York City attorney and partner in the international law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1984. He received his undergraduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his law degree from New York Law School.

Adrian will remain in Romania in the private sector for the time being.

According to Adrian, “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the United States Ambassador to Romania.”
