Patrick Winston Celebrates 50th Reunion

Jodi Amatulli
Patrick Winston, Class of 1969, celebrated his 50th Reunion in October. Coming “back home” to Hamden Hall offered Patrick an opportunity to reflect on his fulfilling career and the impact that Hamden Hall had on his life. He noted that his mother, Cornell Winston, taught English and geography at Hamden Hall for 15 years while he attended the school from second grade through 12th grade.
After his 1969 graduation, Patrick earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1973 from the University of Miami in Florida. In 1974, he did graduate work at St. Martins School of Art in London, and in 1985, he earned a Master in Education from Temple University, Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia. In 1989, he earned a Master of Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
“I have been teaching college level fine art since 1981—38 years and I still love it,” said Patrick, who launched his career with 2D Design course at Delaware County College. He than taught at Drexel University, Antonelli School of Art, and Montgomery County College. He is currently a full professor of Fine Art at Montgomery County College.
“I have been married for 44 years to a wonderful woman who was a professional photographer and loves horses, so we bought a horse farm in beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania,” Patrick said.
The couple has bred, sold, and trained show horses for over 30 years. The have had more than 60 horses during that time and many “did very well in the show ring,” winning honors such as Reserve National Champion AMHR, National Champion WCMR, European National Champion 2-year-old Stallion, Regional Champion Western Pleasure, Grand Champion Pleasure Trail, Grand Champion Hunter and other multiple class and show winners. Their horses have been sold to buyers all over the U.S. as well as imported to Egypt and the Netherlands.
As for his teaching career, he was hooked from the first class.
“I loved it and from that moment, I knew I wanted to be a college professor teaching art for the rest of my life. I find teaching to be challenging, rewarding and gratifying. Every semester I am challenged by new students with varying personalities and abilities. However, I welcome these challenges with enthusiasm and patience. To see the tremendous growth that occurs in my students is incredibly rewarding and I am overwhelmed with gratification when they are successful with their artwork.”
When looking back on my his education and what drew me to teaching he said, “I came to the realization that other than my parents, teachers have been the strongest influence in my life.”
At Hamden Hall, it was Mr. Hench, a history teacher, who made an impact on Patrick. “He somehow artfully inspired me to really study hard to succeed in his class. Through the help of Mr. Hench, I did succeed and began to truly realize my capabilities. Today, what I cherish most is that he instilled in me an appreciation for learning, which has evolved into a passion for education. He also taught me the value of perseverance. What I discovered on my own was that not everyone learns in the same manner.”
Over the course of his teaching career, Patrick was named Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1996 and 2007.
Beyond the classroom, Patrick is also an artist and has exhibited his artwork in a variety of museums and galleries and has collections as well.
