Jennifer LaVelle Holguin 1983
The story you are talking about is from Cushing Cabaret from my junior year, so 1982... I did a little skit in the back of the room where I was Betty Lou. After (I think) really nailing her character the first night, guests were anticipating seeing "Betty Lou" the next night.
So when it was time for me to go on stage, I waited, and waited (because it was not out of the norm for Betty Lou to be late and rush in like a wind-swept newspaper!) By that time people were chanting BETT-Y LOU, BETT-Y LOU! I opened the door, carrying lots of bags, again, just as she would do, and rushed through the crowd apologizing for being late. I did my skit with the blonde wig, sweater, and a tan corduroy skirt. I think I mimicked the way she would be so wrapped up in her thoughts that she would temporarily get scattered. Then she would quickly bring it in, probably remove her glasses and lower her voice and talk very seriously. I think I even mimicked the way she would bring her hands to her chest, with her palms out, finger tips touching, and slide her hands from her upper chest to her diaphragm area. It was the highlight of my acting career at Hamden Hall! I loved her and really loved bringing her character to stage. She was a very passionate teacher who loved her job every day. I had tremendous respect for her and appreciated her concern and care that she showed all of her students. A few years ago I had asked a couple of the people I acted with if they had a tape of this night, but no one did. I would still LOVE to have some proof for my children that I was in fact funny, and made people laugh!!! If you ever find any recordings from way back when, I would love to get a copy.
