High Marks for Latin Students on National Exam
The World Language Department and its academic achievements in classical studies has been recognized beyond the classroom as Middle and Upper School Latin students participated in the National Latin Exam with 17 students earning awards for their outstanding performance. Latin teachers Stephanie Spaulding and Alison Orlebeke had the distinct honor of administering the exam.
The students awarded for their outstanding performance on the exam include freshmen Eli Davis and Rosemary White with Summa Cum Laude (Gold Medal); sophomore Stephen Sokol, freshmen Tommy Liu and Cat Woodcock with Maxima Cum Laude (Silver Medal); junior Amy Zhou, sophomores Mia Aisin and Raven Pitskel, and eighth-grader Rebecca Near with Magna Cum Laude; and seniors Luca Correa, Cove Ward, and Andrew Yang, junior Paxon Campbell, sophomores Abella Cheng and Eli Edelen, freshman Ariel Gilmore, and seventh-grader Noah Bekes with Cum Laude.
“I am so proud of all our students for their hard work and determination on the National Latin Exam,” said Dr. Orlebeke. “Every year, the students look forward to moving up, advancing their skills, and showing how much they have learned about the ancient world.”
The National Latin Exam is a 40-question exam that covers general knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary, translation, and derivatives. The scholastic exam is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. The basic purposes of the National Latin Exam are to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student.
The learning continues as the students will be attending Connecticut State Latin & Greek Day MMXXVI at Holiday Hill on Thursday, April 30. The immersive event sponsored by the Classical Association of Connecticut welcomes students from all over the state to participate in activities and presentations inspired by the classics. With Ms. Spaulding and Dr. Orlebeke, the students will spend the day enjoying a full schedule of activities such as academic contests, crafts, presentations, athletic competitions, project viewing, and more.
