Camp-Read-A Lot Brings Adventure and Literacy to Grade 2 Classroom

The sights and sounds of a cozy camping-themed haven welcomed second-grade students as they spent the late morning embarking on an educational and creative retreat full of books and activities with Camp Read-A- Lot.
Camp Read-A-Lot has been part of the Grade 2 curriculum for almost 10 years as implemented by teacher Erin Correa. The special activity serves as both an enriching learning experience as students are encouraged to become lifelong readers and to commemorate the national program Read Across America, which promotes literacy and celebrates the joys of reading.

Mrs. Correa and fellow teacher Emily White transformed the conjoining classrooms into four stations: Camp Reading Rangers, Camp Evergreen, Camp Blue Water, and Camp Super S’mores. Reading tents and chairs were set up throughout the space, along with dimmed lighting and fire pits to enhance the imaginative feeling of camping under the stars. The students were divided into groups of three and rotated between each campsite. Each student grabbed their book of choice for the first task of silent reading as ambient music played in the background.

While reading was the main focus, the students also partook in a variety of team-building activities. The activities were related to the prior units of study within the classes. One activity called Camp Trading Post asked students to match a series of cards featuring camping items and draw the coins that are used for the item in relation to their monetary unit. Other areas of focus included time telling and additional record sheets. The morning ended with a scavenger hunt around the room before breaking for lunch.

“Camp Read-A Lot has become a favorite tradition as it is an enjoyable way to promote a love of reading in a fun and engaging atmosphere,” said Mrs. Correa and Mrs. White. “Every single student should be so proud of the effort they have put into growing their reading skill, and it is rewarding to see how far they have come this year.”
