The Balancing Act of Measurements with Grade 3

Lower School science teacher Emily Davies brought balance and scientific fun to the classroom as third-grade students partook in a hands-on learning project where they explored different ways of measuring the mass of different objects.
In class, the students have been learning about the properties of density, mass and volume, as well as where each can be applied and implemented. Along with the classroom lessons, Mrs. Davies played the song Mass, Volume, Density by Hopscotch Songs for students to sing along and learn about the properties in an enjoyable way. The scientific exploration continued with the activity, the Balancing Scale Challenge. The students were broken up into groups of two as they worked together to answer the question of how different objects can have the same mass.

Mrs. Davies explained the types of measurement scales and the objects that will be used in the activity. The objects included wooden blocks, washers, corks, puff balls, and more. Each group began by choosing a target object to place on one side of the scale before adding additional objects to the other side to balance out the scale. The students recorded what objects and how many were placed on the scale on their worksheet. Each group was advised to try three different target objects and draw a picture illustrating which object they chose.
