Class of 1997 Alumnus and Guests Host World's Largest Pizza Party
Congratulations to Class of 1997 alumnus Colin Caplan and 4,525 pizza-lovers for breaking the Guinness Book World Record for the “World's Largest Pizza Party” on September 12 on the New Haven Town Green!
When the record was official, Colin told the crowd, "We are the pizza capital of the United States, and now, New Haven is home to the world’s largest pizza party!"
Colin is the owner of Taste of New Haven and the organizer, along with New Haven City Officials, of the 10th Annual Grand Prix & A-1 Toyota Apizza Feast. The 4,525 partiers ate two slices of “apizza” each in just 15 minutes! In the end, the record-setting event required five Big Green Pizza Trucks, 70 vendors, 720 pizzas, 10,000 slices, and 600 staff and volunteers. The previous record holder was Tulsa, Okla., where the record of 3,357 pizza participants was set in 2023.
“Achieving the Guinness Book World Record for the World's Largest Pizza Party is my way of giving back to the community,” said Colin. “We had such a diverse crowd for this amazing event. Pizza is a together thing, and our community does better together.”
Next up for Colin is co-curating “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” a new exhibit at the New Haven Museum on the history of New Haven pizza and Italian immigration. Colin’s partners for this exhibit include Gorman Bechard and Dean Falcone, the producing team behind the Pizza A Love Story documentary, and Jason Bischoff-Wurstle, the director of photo archives at the New Haven Museum. The exhibit runs through October 2027.
