James Cave, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Air Force 1951 - 1955

Marilyn Hewitt
Jim Cave from the Class of 1949 served in the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War Era from 1951 to 1955.

Stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Maine and linked to bases in Texas, Alaska, and Greenland, Jim was honored to be part of an elite force that carried atom bombs that could strike Russia from anywhere in the U.S. He took several courses while in the military, including electronics school at which he used the skills he learned helping out at his father's radio store since he was 8 years old.

Jim realized he had an eye ailment while learning to fly B-86's. While he was recovering from corrective surgery, eyes bandaged,he fell in love (sight unseen) with his nurse, now his wife, Mary.

Says Jim, "When I went to college, I knew that if I were going to be successful, I would have to do it on my own. I had the background from Hamden Hall that supported me. Everything I learned in the Air Force added to the base that I got at Hamden Hall."
