Green Eggs and Ham a Tasty Way to Promote Nutrition and Literacy
They may not have eaten them with a mouse or in a house, but Kindergarten students did indeed like the green eggs and ham they were served in the Lender Refectory surrounded by friends and family!
The annual Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast – a staple at Hamden Hall for nearly 30 years – was the culmination of a nutrition unit for the Kindergartners and a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday month and the national literacy program Read Across America, according to Kindergarten teacher Monica Lyons.

“We started with a nutrition unit and learned about healthy foods and we also set a goal to try and read 10 books over a week’s time. We ended up reading 11,” said Monica. “This breakfast is a merging of all those things and really brings it all together.”
The cafeteria had a definite Dr. Seuss theme – from the green scrambled eggs to the truffala tree centerpieces (not sure what a truffala is? Read Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax!) Mrs. Lyons even created a Dr. Seuss-inspired invitation that encouraged guests to attend via rhyme.
Plates of green eggs, ham, home fries, fruit, green bagels, and more were placed on hand-drawn placemats created by the students for their friends and families to enjoy.
