Dan Rogoz Takes New England Cross Country Crown!

The Cross Country team traveled north last Saturday to run in the Division V New England Cross Country Championship Race at Berwick Academy in Maine. Coach Dave Bennett had reasonably high expectations for his squad, but what occurred on the soaking wet and muddy course proved extraordinary.
With a field of 124 runners, senior Dan Rogoz won the event with a time of 19:08! Rogoz was followed by junior Tyler Bisson who finished 17th (20:40); senior Max Feldman 36th (21:49); freshman Alex Slossberg 42nd (22:07); sophomore Nathaniel Coffey 57th (22:46); junior John Gallalee 75th (23:18); and freshman Silas Newman 91st (23:52). The combined team results earned the Hornets a 3rd place finish - their best ever at the New Englands. With a 2nd place finish in the CISAC league meet to their credit as well, the 2009 cross country team has proven itself one of the school's best.

What made this race even more extraordinary, however, was the fact that as the race was drawing to a close, Rogoz had spotted that runners in front of him had taken a wrong turn, and he tried to hail them and get them back on the correct track. When they did not hear him, Rogoz decided to run the rest of the proper course, rather than follow the lead group, and thereby gave up any chance of catching them. As a result, however, the rest of the field followed Dan and ran the entire course correctly, while the leaders had to be disqualified for failing to run the entire race.

Congratulations to the team, and to Dan Rogoz for his integrity as well as his dedication and effort.
