The Scientific Connection of Animal Structures and Functions
Fourth-grade students jumped into the exploratory discovery of how animal structures and all the parts of living things have a job and what those jobs are with Lower School science teacher Emily Davies.
For a more hands-on approach, the class took a field trip to the Hungerford Nature Center & Museum where they saw directly how animals are perfectly adapted to their habitats in a unique and fascinating way.
The students saw a Russian tortoise with thick strong front legs with sharp claws and learned how those structures are useful to the tortoise for burrowing to hibernate in the winter. The group also watched and observed as a ferret twisted and turned its long and flexible body to squeeze through the tiniest of gaps — a skill they use to hunt for prey in the wild.
Mrs. Davies shared that the students will soon move into the next phase of the unit of study where they will choose their own native Connecticut animal to research and make a scientific drawing that highlights the animal's structures and functions.
