Middle School Advocates Foster Student Bonds Beyond the Halls

The upper fields at the Beckerman Athletic Center buzzed with conversations and team-building activities inclusive of a marble track race, number association, and stepping stones as 29 Upper School students hosted Activity Day for students in Grades 6-8 as part of the Middle School Advocates Program.
stablished in 1995, the Middle School Advocates Program brings together a dedicated group of juniors and seniors who are chosen to work with and serve as mentors and role models to the Middle School community. Middle School Director Brian Christman, Middle School Dean and teacher Paulomi Aldo, and history teacher David Sokoloff currently serve as the program faculty advisors.

The 2026-2027 Middle School Advocates are seniors Carmine Cariati, Anton Cruz, Leo Dottori, Teresa Esposito, Lily Evans, AJ Park, Frida Ramirez-Moreno, Sean Raymond, Jace Rossi, and Allison Yang; juniors  Mia Aisin, Anna Aslan, Teagan Bird, Theo Botsman, John Countryman, Caleb Desta, Clara Garcia-Gallet, Henry Horotan, Ruina Huang, Braeden Jackson, Avocet MacDougall, Ben Marsi, Vivian Martin, Lila Reiling, Phoebe Roness, Bradley Steele, Stephen Sokol, and Hana Vining; and sophomore Gio DeCristofaro.

“I wanted to apply to be a Middle School Advocate because I enjoy working with younger students and wanted to be someone they could look up to and feel comfortable talking to,” shared Ruina. “I also wanted to learn from the experience and become a better mentor and leader. Through the mentoring program, I hope the students can feel supported and encouraged and always feel free to ask me questions or come to me when they need help.”

As respective student leaders, the advocates are chosen through an extensive application and interview process. Throughout the year, the advocates meet with their designated group on a monthly basis to facilitate discussions and activities addressing challenges of adolescence and other issues of importance to middle schoolers.

Other duties of the chosen advocates include serving as campus tour volunteers, helping with tutoring and proctoring study halls, working with faculty and coordinating events such as assemblies, the PSA Film Contest, the Middle School Olympics, Eighth-Grade Celebration, and more.
