Grade 6 Graduation Celebrates the Value of Community and Friendship
Sixth-grade students processed into the Taylor Performing Arts Center for a graduation ceremony amid parents, families, and faculty and staff to bid a bittersweet farewell to their Lower School journey and celebrate the next milestone of joining the Middle School community.
In keeping with the Hamden Hall tradition, the students performed the school song before gathering together on stage to perform a medley from their spring musical production of Annie, Kids. To make the performance even more special, the students arranged and adapted new lyrics highlighting memories from the year with an appearance from Grade 6 teachers Andrea Calandrelli, Beth Hunter, and Patrick Yeoman.
Lower School Director Lorri Carroll took the podium to address the rising seventh-graders, noting how they created a class culture filled with connection, excitement, and fun. In her remarks, she spoke to how the students joyfully embraced becoming role models to their PreSchool/PreKindergarten buddies, welcomed new students, celebrated each other's successes, and met every challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. Most importantly, she emphasized how the class understood the importance of friendship and leadership.
“As you prepare to leave sixth grade behind, I hope you recognize not only the impact you have made on others, but how much you have grown,” said Mrs. Carroll. “You are a group that understands the value of community. You learn from one another. You help one another. You root for one another. The kindness and patience you showed to your buddies deserves to be celebrated. It reminds all of us that leadership isn't just about setting an example—it's about making others feel welcomed, included, and cared for. And whenever you wonder what comes next, remember the message you shared with all of us: The sun will come out tomorrow.”
Now it was time for the celebratory moment—the presentation of the diplomas. One-by-one, the students gleefully stood up and walked across the stage to receive their diplomas from Head of School Bob Izzo. As the final student returned to their seat, Mr. Izzo offered congratulatory remarks.
“Congratulations to the rising seventh graders, we could not be more proud of you,” he said. “You have done a terrific job in creating a sense of community as shown with the way you support one another, and it has left a lasting impression with the community. As you move on to the next chapter, you will be known as the Class of 2032 and be the first seventh-grade class to enjoy the new Middle School campus. There are so many opportunities ahead of you, and you should take advantage of all of them.”
Mr. Izzo took a moment to recognize and honor Mrs. Calandrelli, Mrs. Hunter, and Mr. Yeoman for their hard work during the year. He also acknowledged specialist teachers and other Lower School faculty members.
The ceremony concluded with a special gift to the graduates created by Mrs. Carroll—a special slideshow presentation full of pictures throughout the years. Following the ceremony, all the students and their families enjoyed a reception in Swain Library.
