Sweet Celebratory Tradition Honors Our Senior Lifers

The heart of the Hamden Hall experience stems in tradition as seven seniors from the Class of 2026 joined the honorary list of students who have spent the longevity of their academic careers under the pines at the annual Lifers’ Shirting Ceremony.
Hamden Hall has been recognizing its "Lifers" since 1966 - including the establishment of an official Shirting Ceremony in 1982, which helped broaden the tradition of the Valentine Bake Sale. The seniors who have earned the highly regarded “Lifer” distinction include Tami Afolalu, Noah Bush, Anya Carter, Cole Christman, Leon Jiang, April Schwartz, and Andrew Yang.

The seven Lifers and their families were invited to a morning reception where they shared countless stories, all reflecting the special moments throughout the years. It was a true trip down memory lane as the group took a moment to view a slideshow presentation featuring a myriad of photos from the last 13 to 15 years. Photos included yearbook portraits, field trips, club activities, athletic games, campus events, and more.

The seniors recalled their favorite time-honored traditions, specifically the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale, the Calandrelli Cash Party with Grade 6 teacher Andrea Calandrelli, class trips, dance parties, and other highlights.

The celebratory morning tradition continued as the students and families walked into Taylor Gymnasium for the all-school assembly. Head of School Bob Izzo greeted the students and moved into opening remarks before turning it over to Lower School Director Lorri Carroll. Mrs. Carroll shared the history of the Lifers’ Shirting Ceremony. Additionally, she recognized the Alumni Lifers who were in the audience, including Irma Felix Rappaport 1982, current parent Lacy Luciani Zuffelato 2000, Adam Weisz 2003, and faculty and staff members including Director of Facilities Jim Hunter 1980, Maintenance staff member Tim Riccio 2004, Admissions Associate Alex Acquarulo 2014, and Lower School Physical Education teacher Elliot Markman 2017.

Continuing with the sweet tradition, PreSchool, PreKindergarten, and Kindergarten students gathered on and in front of the stage to perform a few songs including the all-time favorite C is for Cookie. As the song finished, the Lifers turned to the younger students, who helped them put on the custom-made red T-shirt for the official ceremony. Senior Class President Ravindu Karaunte was also shirted with the Lifers.
