What makes a bird a bird? The answer is feathers, and birds are the only creatures with feathers. Third-grade students became junior ornithologists as they have been learning all about birds in class with Lower School Science teacher Emily Davies.
The unit of study began with identifying different types of birds, thinking about what they look and sound like, and how they act in nature. As part of the feather investigation, the students examined different types of feathers using magnifying glasses. Each student made a labeled, scientific drawing of a feather noting the shape, color, and key structures.
Outside of the classroom, the students took a field trip to East Rock State Park, which is a Connecticut hotspot for bird watching. At the park, the students were tasked with using their binoculars to observe different birds in their habitat. The students saw wood duck, osprey, golden-crowned kinglet, cardinal, and chickadee, to name a few.
According to Mrs. Davies, the students will continue their bird study by learning about nests and eggs, beaks, migration, and the physics of flight.
