As a seasoned legal professional, Class of 2004 alumna Karen Markman Newburg uses her extensive experience in estate planning and administration to help clients as a senior associate attorney at Long Hagan Huff-Harris in Boston, Mass.

Prior to her appointment to this position in early 2024, Karen previously held positions as estate administrator and associate attorney within the same firm, alongside other roles at Konowitz & Greenberg and Weatherby & Associates, specializing in estate planning and elder law.

Karen graduated Williams College in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and philosophy. She went on to obtain her Master of Science in Health Care Administration at the University of New Haven in 2009 and completed 14 Ph.D.-level credits in health care ethics at Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics at St. Louis University. She earned her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) in health law at the Saint Louis University School of Law.

Before pursuing her law degree and career, she returned to Hamden Hall in 2014 to teach English in the Middle School and served as the advisor for the Model United Nations Club. Wrestling with the decision to become a lawyer or a teacher, Karen ultimately chose the judicial path.

“I was drawn to help clients with their trusts and probate needs, finding the importance of providing families with the security of a will and sound estate planning to be rewarding work.”

Karen and her husband, Nathaniel Newburg, currently reside in Norwood, Mass., where Nate is a partner at Newburg CPA.  The couple met during college and have three children; all boys ages 7, 5, and 1. With the three boys, Karen noted that they do not like to sleep much, but said that life is busy and fun.

Karen is the older sister of 2007 alumna Sara Markman and 2017 alumnus Elliot Markman. Reminiscing about her time under the pines, Karen shared that she misses her friends and faculty, but also a few culinary staples including the Corner Deli, Soup Girl, and certainly New Haven pizza. She said that she does return periodically to visit her siblings and friends.
