The Boys’ Varsity Water Polo Team won its back-to-back matches against Loomis Chaffee and Phillips Exeter Academy during Homecoming weekend on Saturday, October 28.
In the first match against Loomis Chaffee, senior and goalie Connor Jermain led in the net with 11 saves and two assists while junior Anthony Ferneini had six goals, one assist, and two steals and sophomore Heath Evans had four goals and one steal. Sophomore Grant Evans had one steal and seventh-grader Blake Zeitlin had one assist and one steal. The match ended 13-4 in favor of the Hornets.
In the second match, Connor had nine saves and Anthony had seven goals, three assists, four steals, and two shot blocks. Junior Eric Huang tallied two goals, two assists, and one shot block as sophomore Jack Cucchiarelli had two goals, five assists, and three shot blocks and eighth-grader John Countryman ended the match with one steal. The team won with a score of 14-11.
“What an incredible week we had with three big wins securing Hamden Hall as the #2 seed for the New England NEPSAC Tournament in our postseason play,” said Coach Martha Phelan. “In just two years of becoming a varsity program, the Hamden Hall Water Polo team has become a leading contender competing against Division 1 schools that have produced legacies of winning. We are inspired, focused and determined to finish strong.”
The team also won its match with a score of 13-10 against Suffield Academy on Wednesday, October 25. The team will host the final home match of the season against Westminster School on Wednesday, November 1, at 4 p.m.
The NEPSAC tournament will be hosted by Phillips Andover Academy with a date and time to be announced.
