Schoonmaker Drafted by Cowboys

Luke’s relatively high selection naturally elicited plenty of excitement within the school community. No one is prouder of course than head football coach Joe Linta, who is also Luke’s agent, and was in attendance at the family home when Luke’s name was called out by Cowboy great Drew Pearson. "It's been a joy these last seven years to be associated with Luke and his family.  I knew he had NFL potential when he was playing at Hamden Hall, but to see it come to fruition is thrilling. He was a joy to coach (and now to represent) and he gave 100% at every practice and game and was a consummate teammate. I never had to tell Luke something twice on the field--a very bright young man. To have Luke be the third player to sign an NFL contract in 4 years is a proud moment for me and our team and shows how our program has evolved."
Athletic Director, David Doyle, added, “Luke is a great representative of our school and athletic program; a phenomenal talent as well as a wonderful person.  He has earned everything that he has accomplished up to this point, and I have no doubt he will continue to do so with the Cowboys. We are excited to follow his career.”
Head of School, Bob Izzo, has certainly seen great potential cross the stage at graduation but continues to be amazed at the many success stories of Hornet graduates. "We love seeing our students reaching for the stars and daring to achieve their dreams in so many areas. As a Hamden Hall student, Luke exemplified the school’s core values of Excellence, Support, Participation, Accountability and Respect. Luke has always held himself to the highest standards. While we are incredibly proud of him for his football accomplishments, we are most proud of Luke the man. He is a true gentleman.”
This writer has enjoyed the opportunity of teaching all of the Schoonmaker children. Luke set a fine example for his siblings in demonstrating what it means to be a successful scholar-athlete by working just as hard in developing his academic talents as his football prowess.
Of course Luke’s younger sister and brother, juniors Lily and Mark, are very much a presence at Hamden Hall where Lily is a top notch lax player, and Mark is hoping to follow in his older brother’s steps in football at a D1 level. A beaming Lily said, “I am beyond proud of Luke for this accomplishment. It has been truly inspiring to watch him reach this dream through his incredible hardwork and dedication. Nothing was handed to him.  He has remained so humble and stayed true to himself throughout this journey and I really admire him for that. I am so excited for this new opportunity for him.” Mark added, “It has been nothing but a pleasure watching Luke fulfill his dreams, especially the humble and hardworking kid that he is. He has taught me so much both on and off the field.”
Luke came back for a visit just before the draft and staged a brief workout down at the Beckerman Center. When asked for a bit of reflection, Luke responded, “I really enjoyed my time at Hamden Hall. I met a lot of great teachers and friends. We had two great football seasons in which I made really great memories with teammates that I still talk to today. I was so fortunate to meet Coach Linta and have him as a coach. Now I am able to have him as my agent and he has become family to me. I am really excited to continue my football career at the highest level and excited to give it my best and be the best teammate that I can be. Go Hornets! Go Cowboys!”
