Lower School Community Sends Love with Hugs Care Package

Soldiers around the world will soon receive Valentine’s Day cards from Lower School students as they participate in the annual community service project Hugs for Soldiers.
Soldiers around the world will soon receive Valentine’s Day cards from Lower School students as they participate in the annual community service project Hugs for Soldiers.

The project was spearheaded by Lower School Art teacher Sue Bennett 1973, who wanted to do something special for those serving our country. Now this random act of kindness has become a yearly tradition with students writing, drawing, and designing personalized cards during their art classes.

“Students spent class time making a variety of cards full of colorful pictures, poems, and words of gratitude and encouragement,” said Mrs. Bennett. “Having our school community be part of a meaningful, global initiative that touches the lives of so many is such a special experience for all involved.”

Yearly, thousands of Valentine’s Day cards and notes are delivered overseas to the troops. While the organization scaled back school participation these last two years, Hamden Hall had been asked to continue taking part as the organization remains impressed with the artwork and commitment of the school community. All cards are sent mid-January to ensure a timely delivery for a holiday surprise.

According to the organization’s website, Hugs for Soldiers was founded in 2003 in Duluth, Ga., with the mission of offering comfort from home and brightening a soldier’s day with a care package, card, or letter.

“A random act of kindness means more than ever today. Not only are the troops getting something from us to cheer them up, but they’re also getting a hug,” maintained Mrs. Bennett.

Keeping with tradition, students also send separate Valentine’s Day cards and packages to Class of 2003 alumnus Capt. Matthew Peterson wherever he is stationed. He shares these cards with his fellow troop members and returns the favor by sending back thank-you notes and photos featuring soldiers with the cards in hand.
