Math Team Scores Highest Ranking Yet

Hamden Hall’s Math Team earned second place among the 19 teams that participated in the Greater New Haven Math League's 2019-2020 competition season. The team just wrapped up its fifth and final contest and will now head to the state meet.

Overall during the season, the team earned first-place wins during two separate competitions, according to Mathematics Dept. Chair and team coach Maria Agulian. “This is a great achievement,” noted Mrs. Agulian. “We have never finished in second place and we were not very far from first place.”

The final results garnered the team a berth in the state competition on April 1.

Individual achievements included junior Tom Liu, who earned the first-place prize from his grade level; and sophomore Lucy Xu, who won third place among all of the underclassmen in the league.

Hamden Hall’s Math Team is made up of about 60 students, Mrs. Agulian said. The team score is based on the points of the top students, which include: Vedant Aryan, Frankie Feng, Jason Gao, Harry Han, Tom Liu, Josh Mukherjee, Bailey Smoko, Todd Tan, Ruth Wang, Lucy Xu, Steven Zhang, Zenan Zhang, and Miles Zhi.

The Mathcounts team also placed second out of 16 teams at a recent chapter competition at Yale University. Mathcounts is a national competition for students in Grade 8 and below.

The team was made up of: eighth-graders Vedant Aryan, Portia Hu, and Isabel Yang; and sixth-grader Leon Jiang.

According to Mrs. Agulian, Leon and Vedant were in the top eight from among the 100 competing students. Both were in the countdown round with Leon winning first place.

The team qualified to go to the state competition on March 7.
